Salem-Blacksburg game to be on radio

BLACKSBURG - The Salem at Blacksburg High School football game will be broadcast live today from Bill Brown Stadium. This is the 10th year WKEX (1430 AM) has broadcast Blacksburg High's football games. Bob Smith and Mike Callahan will be the announcers. Broadcast time is 7 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Affirmative action subject of debate|

RADFORD - Two well-known journalists will debate affirmative action Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Radford University.

Linda Chavez, a writer for USA Today, and Juan Williams, a political analyst and writer for the Washington Post, will debate policies for and criticisms of affirmative action. The debate will be moderated

Chavez has been called by the New York Times "an influential voice on civil rights policy." She has held several political positions, and currently serves as U.S. expert on the United Nations Subcommission on Human Rights.

Williams is a motivational speaker and frequent lecturer on such topics as civil rights, politics and journalism. He is writing a biography of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

The program is sponsored by Radford University's Student Life and Black Awareness programming boards. The debate is free and open to the public.

New in town? Meeting's for you

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Newcomers will hold their fall meeting Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church on Toms Creek and Prices Fork roads.

Mayor Roger Hedgepeth will welcome new residents. Patti Crowley, president-elect of the Chamber of Commerce, will speak.

NRCC offering intro to Internet

DUBLIN - New River Community College will offer a noncredit course that will give participants a working knowledge of the information superhighway. The class meets Sept. 30 through Oct. 28, 1 to 4 p.m., in Rooker Hall, room 254, at the Dublin campus. The course will include a brief history of the Internet, an introduction to its many concepts and services and an overview of the World Wide Web, Mosaic and more. Teleconference to link communities

ROANOKE - The National Teleconference on Sustainable Communities is an unprecedented event that will link community leaders via satellite with each other and an audience of business, government, environmental and community leaders across the nation.

The teleconference is Wednesday, 1 to 6 p.m., and Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke and New River Community College in Dublin. Topics will include community growth and development, leadership, telecommunications and finances. The teleconference is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce and its bureaus. Local sponsors include NationsBank of Virginia, Carilion Health Systems, Virginia Western Community College, New River Community College, New Century Council, Fifth Planning District Commission and New River Valley Planning District Commission. Class teaches how to monitor streams

CHRISTIANSBURG - Save Our Streams monitors' training will be provided by Montgomery County Extension and the Virginia Tech Museum of Natural History.

Individuals and families who participate will learn to monitor stream health and protect clean water sources in our area. Class is Sept. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and will be held at a local stream. Registration is required. Materials fee is $8. Country station at local events|

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Kool Country (100.7 FM) gang and Levi Garrett will be at Pilot Homes from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Prize packs and New River Speedway tickets will be given out.

On Saturday, Garrett and the gang will be at Septemberfest in Radford. Later that night, they will be at the Blacksburg Marriott for country night from 9 to 11 p.m. Free dance lessons and a dance contest will be featured.

Outdoor concert, picnic scheduled

CHRISTIANSBURG - Houserockin' John and the Hyper Brothers will be the featured band at an outdoor concert and picnic at the Montgomery Museum, Lewis Miller Regional Art Center tonight at 6:30.

Cost is $3.50 and includes hot dog, drink and ice cream sundaes. Those who bring a kitchen item - such as dish towels, serving spoons and potholders - to donate to the museum will receive a $1 discount.

Ducks Unlimited plans dove hunt

BLACKSBURG - The 17th annual Sponsor Dove Hunt and Banquet, sponsored by the New River Valley chapter of Ducks Unlimited, will be Saturday.

The hunt will be at Mack Wall's Dove Field from 1 to 4 p.m. The banquet will be at Tom Terrific's in Radford from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ducks Unlimited is a national organization founded in 1937. Its projects provide habitat for more than 600 wildlife species, including ducks, geese and endangered species such as the whooping crane and bald eagle.
