NORFOLK - City officials have settled a federal lawsuit filed by 36 police sergeants, lieutenants and captains over overtime pay by agreeing to pay the officers $200,000.
Each of the officers will receive $5,555.55, even though they worked differing amounts of overtime. The city will pay another $50,000 to cover the officers' legal fees.
The police officers sued for overtime in January under the Fair Labor Standards Act. As supervisors, they were not eligible for overtime under city policy.
Norfolk officials did not admit liability.

CHESAPEAKE - A canal used mostly by pleasure boaters through the Great Dismal Swamp has been temporarily closed to traffic because of low water, a move that authorities attributed to the prolonged dry spell.
The Dismal Swamp Canal that runs from Chesapeake to Elizabeth City, N.C., handles about 2,000 vessels a year seeking a scenic, protected route away from the ocean.
