BUFFALOES SUFFER 2ND STRAIGHT LOSS

Northside used a 17-point fourth quarter to pull away from Floyd County 56-50 on Thursday night to hand the two-time defending Group A champion Buffaloes their second consecutive loss after a 59-game winning streak.

The Buffaloes' losses have come against teams from the Group AA Blue Ridge District, including Tuesday's loss to Salem that ended a two-year winning streak.

The Vikings held a 15-6 lead early, but Floyd County came back behind 3-pointers by Melissa Cantrell, Sara Conner and Stacy Wimmer. After an up-and-down game that featured several lead changes in the middle quarters, Northside sank nine of 15 free throws in the final period to seal the victory. Samantha Webb iced it by making four of four free-throw attempts in the final 90 seconds.

Amy Heath led Northside (2-3) early, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter in addition to her four assists. Sophomore Crystal Barrett was the leading scorer for the Vikings with 18 points, 12 in the second and third quarters, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Webb finished with nine points.

Cantrell led Floyd County (3-2) with 17 points, 12 of which came on 3-pointers. Conner finished with 12 points for the Buffaloes in the loss.

Shawsville 60, Craig County 28: Megan Forster scored 20 points to lead the Shawnees in a non-district game.

Shawsville held the Rockets to five field goals in the game, two of those coming after halftime.

Beth Burdette and Sara Haygood scored 10 points for Shawsville. Bonnie Boardwine led Craig County (0-1) with 19 points.

Magna Vista 82, Martinsville 80: Tanesia Kellam's three-point play and Kim Brown's basket late in overtime put Magna Vista up for good as the Warriors upset Martinsville in a Piedmont District game in Ridgeway.

Kellam finished with 21 points and hit a free throw with six seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. Martinsville (2-2, 1-1) had a chance to win in regulation, but Brown, who scored just five points, stole the ball from Erica Brandon to prevent the last shot.

Sophomore Moranda Wade led the Warriors (3-2, 2-0) with 22 points and another sophomore, Sandi Reid, added 17 despite sitting most of the game because of foul trouble.

The Bulldogs were led by Tresita Holland, who scored a game-high 29 points. Brandon finished with 22.

Bassett 65, Dan River 34: In Ringgold, the Bengals outscored Dan River 17-3 in the first quarter and went on to beat the Wildcats in the Piedmont District.

Bassett was led by freshman point guard Heather Miller, who scored 20 points and had eight assists and 11 rebounds. Senior Forward Lynettia Johnson added 18 points, five assists and eight rebounds.

Lashawn Hairston led Dan River with 10 points.

Covington 56, Rockbridge County 53: The Cougars held a 20-point halftime lead after outscoring Rockbridge by 18 points in the second quarter, then had to fight off a late Wildcats run as Covington won its second game of the year in non-district action in Covington.

The Cougars (2-0) used their press to wear down Rockbridge and they connected on eight of 11 free throws in the second quarter, as they outscored the Wildcats (1-2) 20-2 in the period. Charlie Laws scored seven of her 11 points in the second quarter, and Joann Helton had six of her game-high 25 points in the period.

The Wildcats outscored Covington in the final two quarters and eventually took the lead by a point with 1 minute to go. Helton sank four of six free throw attemps in the fourth, including two one-and-one situations after Rockbridge claimed the lead, to ice the game for the Cougars.

Tonia Clements led Rockbridge with 14 points and Kate Ides added 10.

Michelle Jeter scored 10 points for Covington.

Staunton River 40, Nelson County 37: Missy Foxx led a fourth-quarter surge by Staunton River and Stephanie McCarty made two clutch free throws as the Golden Eagles pulled out a come-from-behind Seminole District victory in Lovingston.

Staunton River (1-0, 1-0) outscored the Governors 17-4 in the fourth quarter behind Foxx, who made seven of nine free thows and had seven steals in the final period. The Golden Eagles trailed 33-23 after scoring two third-quarter points.

Leading 38-37 with 11 seconds remaining, the Golden Eagles missed a free throw but McCarty grabbed the free throw, was fouled and made the 1-and-1.

McCarty finished with 13 points and Foxx had 10.

Nelson County is 1-2, 1-2.

Liberty 59, Buckingham County 26: In Bedford, the Minettes built a 42-11 halftime lead, then substituted liberally as they coasted past the Knights in the Seminole District.

Kellea Whorley led the way for Liberty (2-1, 2-1) with 20 points. Felicia Miller added 10 points and Sue Cowlbeck grabbed 11 rebounds.

Anita Ross had 11 points for Buckingham County (1-2, 1-2).

Parry McCluer 56, Riverheads 48: Lindsey Coleman and Chrystal Humphries combined to score all but two of the Fighting Blues' second-half points as Parry McCluer came from behind to defeat Riverheads in a non-district game in Buena Vista.

Coleman scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, including 11 in the third quarter as Parry McCluer (1-1) outscored Riverheads 19-4. Humphries finished with eight in the third quarter and had 16 of her 21 points in the second half.

Rural Retreat 46, Lebanon 38: In Rural Retreat, the Indians used a strong second half performance to defeat the Pioneers in a Hogoheegee District game.

Freshman point guard Kristie Osborne scored 15 points for the Indians (2-0) filling in for junior Krystal Dale, who was out with a sprained knee.

Giles 36, Rocky Gap 32: In Rocky Gap, the Spartans pulled away in a turnover-marred non-district game.

Giles (1-1), which won despite 35 turnovers, didn't seal the victory until Jodi Mullins made a pair of free throws after the Eagles, who had 26 turnovers, cut their deficit to three points late in the game. Keli Ratcliffe scored 10 points for Giles. Michelle Sarver led Rocky Gap (0-4) with 13 points.

Carroll County 70, Grayson County 28: In Independence, Carroll County jumped out to a 24-5 first-quarter lead and took advantage of 20 Grayson County turnovers, as the Cavaliers blasted the hosts in a non-district game.

Grayson County managed to shut down the Cavaliers in the second quarter, holding them to six points. Carroll County outscored the Blue Devils 40-18 in the second half.

Bethany Hill and Jennifer Watkins led the Cavaliers (3-1) with 11 points. Talisha Clontz added 10 points. Lindsay Carico led Grayson County (0-4) with 14 points. She scored all of the Blue Devils' 10 third-quarter points.

Tazewell 63, Christiansburg 36: In Tazewell, the Bulldogs took the lead early and never looked back as they defeated the Blue Demons in a non-district game.

Tazewell guard Starr Anderson led all scorers with 15 points. The Blue Demons were led by Christy Brown and Lisa Dalton who each tallied eight points.
