COLLEGE BENEFACTOR DIES IN N.C.

Gordon Hanes, retired president of the Hanes Corp. and a major benefactor of Roanoke College, died at his Winston-Salem, N.C., home on Aug. 31.

He and his wife, the former Helen Greever Copenhaver, a Marion native, created the Copenhaver Scholars in Residence fund, endowing a visiting professor at Roanoke College. They also own a large farm in Burkes Garden in Tazewell County.

The fund is named for Hanes' wife's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Eldridge Copenhaver. Eldridge Copenhaver was president of Marion College, Roanoke College's sister school in Smyth County.

Hanes, described as the "first citizen" of Winston-Salem, served two terms as a state senator and was a widely-known philanthropist in Winston-Salem. His knitting and hosiery company was acquired by the present Sara Lee Corp. in 1979.
