BITTINGER, Myles Willard, 79, of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 5, 1995 at his home following an extended illness. He was born June 14, 1916 at White Sulphur Springs, a son of the late Harry and Zettie Cox Bittinger. He was an active member of the White Sulphur Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church for 45 years and he held a Mission Workers License in the Appalachian Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and pastored several small area churches. He was a retired employee of the National Fish Hatchery in White Sulphur Springs. During World War II he served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV of White Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Keith Snider. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Koontz Bittinger; two sons, Roy Bittinger and his wife, Shelva, of Seattle, Wash., Raymond Bittinger Sr. and his wife, Diane, of Christiansburg, Va.; six daughters, Alice Jean Snider, Shirley Thompson and husband, Jimmie, all of Charlottesville, Va., Velma Dofibaugh and husband, Robert, of Winnsboro, S.C., Ruth Cochran and husband, Thomas, of Buena Vista, Va., Pat Wykle and husband, Richard, of White Sulphur Springs, Pauline Legg and husband, David, of Covington, Va.; four brothers; five sisters; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandschildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, September 8, 1995 at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Gene Sizemore and the Rev. Mike Edds officiating. Interment will follow at Whatcoat Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive their friends at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, Thursday, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Pentecostal Holiness Church, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

CHILDRESS, Girlie Lee Hale, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 1995. She was the daughter of the late Beauregard and Harriet Hale. She was a member of Garden of Prayer #7, where she served on the Mother's Board. She was a faithful member until illness prevented her participation.``Mother Childress'' was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Childress. Survivors include one son, Albert Warren Childress; daughter, Sophronia Mae Brown, both of Roanoke; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Garden of Prayer #7. Elder Shadrach Brown will officiate, with the interment in the Slate Hill Community Cemetery. HAHM, Christine Slusser, 85, of Lexington, died Wednesday, September 6, 1995, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born in Rockbridge County on November 14, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Harry Slusser and Bertha Daniel Slusser. She was the widow of Harvey A. Hahm, and was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Natural Bridge Chapter. Surviving are a daughter, Anna Reed, McLean; two sisters, Dorothy McClure, Glasgow, Edith May, Salt Lake City, Utah; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, September 11, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, with the Rev. Holmes Irving officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. HENDERSON, Emanuel, (``Ed''), of Lynchburg, died Thursday, September 7, 1995 in Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. after a lengthy and courageous battle with leukemia. Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late Ernest B. Henderson and Beulah Church Henderson. Mr. Henderson attended the Forest Alliance Church and was employed with the Department of Transportation. Survivors include his wife, Judy S. Henderson, Lynchburg; nephew, Ross V. Henderson II; several cousins and some loving neighbors. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel, conducted by Pastor Cecil Kramer Jr.. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. She was a life long member of Peters Creek Old German Baptist Church and was retired from the Maid Bess Corporation, with 40 years service. Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel H. and Paul W. Beckner, Roanoke, Alma H. and Fred A. Wenger, Harrisonburg; two sisters-in-law, Rachel P. Hubbard, Shickshinny, Pa., Mildred W. Hubbard, Roanoke; seven nephews; one niece. Funeral services will be conducted from the Peters Creek Old German Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, September 8, 1995, with the Home Brethren officiating. SHORT, George Kyle, (``Pete""), 87, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, September 6, 1995. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He worked at American Bridge, Virginia Department Highways, and owned and operated Shorty's Place from 1930 to 1966, after which he worked at Seibel Brothers Farm Equipment and Wilco Service Center. Mr. Short's early interests included the Vinton Fire Department (Flagman) and the Virginia Minuteman Militia. He was a mason belonging to Pleasants Lodge #63, a lifetime member of Vinton Baptist Church and was on the original Vinton High School Football team and a dedicated community servant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thrasher Short and Edith Austin Short; 10 brothers and sisters and two infant children, Raymond and David.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Hayden Short; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean S. and Earl Hutson, Ellen S. Lotts, Carol S. and Maynard Richardson, Eloise S. and Harvey LaReau; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim L. and Shirley Short, George W. and Donna Short, Ralph E. and Barbara Short; 20 grandchildren, Richard Hutson, John Hutson, Joe Hutson, Terri Phlegar, Cindy Lotts, Garland Lotts, Mark Lotts, Dottie Boone, Brenda Richardson, Beth Milligan, George Short, David Short, Paul Short, Angela Fulbright, Robin Hatcher, Harvey LaReau, Whitney Short, Steven Short, Nicole Short and Ben Short; 11 great-grandchildren, Katherine, Elizab eth, Stephanie and Joseph Hutson, Lauren and Adam Phlegar, Kyle Lotts, Jamie and Jessica Boone, Erica and Christian Fulbright; one sister, Margaret Short McDaniel; sister-in-law, Muriel Gray Short; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, September 11, from the Vinton Baptist Church. Dr. Bill Ross and the Rev. David Elkins officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy memorial contributions may be sent to the Vinton Fire Department, Vinton Baptist Church, Children's Miracle Network, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, or ARC of Roanoke.
