EXPRESS ACQUIRES GOALTENDER

The Roanoke Express has traded defenseman Stephane Desjardins to the Nashville Knights for goaltender Matt DelGuidice.

DelGuidice becomes the second goalie acquired by the Express in the off-season. Roanoke signed former AHL goalie Mike Parson in August.

DelGuidice's best East Coast Hockey League season was with the Raleigh IceCaps in 1993-94, when he compiled a 2.94 goals-against average, the second-lowest GAA in league history at the time.

Desjardins had two goals, five assists and a plus-9 rating in 58 games last season for the Express.

ETC. Sigmon out to better FCS record

Rick Sigmon of Rocky Mount will try to break his track record when racing returns to Franklin County Speedway in Callaway on Saturday night. Sigmon, who set a record of 97.122 mph on the three-eighths-mile oval in August, will be up against Late Model Stock Car points leader Bobby Radford of Ferrum.

There will be a $400 bounty on Street Stock driver Mike Elkins and a $150 bounty on Kelley Kingery in the Pure Stock race. Mini Stock, Rookie and Any Car divisions also will race.

Admission is $5 for adults, free for children 10 and younger.

The Carolina League broke its 2-year-old attendance record by drawing 1,816,193 fans this season, bettering the 1993 record by 73,165 fans. The Durham Bulls set a team attendance record by drawing 390,486 fans to the new Durham Athletic Park.

Attendance records also were set by Wilmington, Prince William and Lynchburg.

Salem, which moved into the new Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium on Aug.7, saw its streak of 11 consecutive years of increased attendance end. The Avalanche drew 140,111 fans, the eighth-best total in the nine-team league.

Che Henderson's goal at the 59:58 mark rallied Radford to a 1-1 tie with Davidson in a men's soccer game in Radford.

Brian Cazalot and Eric Rarus assisted on the goal, which came off a direct free kick for the Highlanders (2-0-1). Bryce Jewett scored off a corner kick late in the first half for the Wildcats (1-1-1).

In Ferrum, Tori Erickson and Meredith Arnott scored goals off Lisa Franzino assists as Roanoke College won 2-0 in women's soccer. Roanoke is 2-0; Ferrum 0-1.
