BUFFALOES SUFFER 2ND STRAIGHT LOSS

Northside used a 17-point fourth quarter to pull away from Floyd County 56-50 on Thursday night to hand the two-time defending Group A champion Buffaloes their second consecutive loss after a 59-game winning streak.

The Buffaloes' losses have come against teams from the Group AA Blue Ridge District, including Tuesday's loss to Salem that ended a two-year winning streak.

The Vikings held a 15-6 lead early, but Floyd County came back behind 3-pointers by Melissa Cantrell, Sara Conner and Stacy Wimmer. After an up-and-down game that featured several lead changes in the middle quarters, Northside sank nine of 15 free throws in the final period to seal the victory. Samantha Webb iced it by making four of four free-throw attempts in the final 90 seconds.

Amy Heath led Northside (2-3) early, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter in addition to her four assists. Sophomore Crystal Barrett was the leading scorer for the Vikings with 18 points, 12 in the second and third quarters, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Webb finished with nine points.

Cantrell led Floyd County (3-2) with 17 points, 12 of which came on 3-pointers. Conner finished with 12 points for the Buffaloes in the loss.
