POTATO HARVEST FESTIVAL TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON HUNGER

Our Savior Lutheran Church at 1845 Cambria St in Christiansburg plans a Potato Harvest Festival Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The congregation has invited members of other churches to bring canned goods, money or more potatoes to alleviate hunger. The festival, which members hope to make an annual event, grows out of the practice of several years of using the church's back lot as a large garden. Potatoes have been given to nearby food banks with more than 5,000 pounds made available over the past two years. The Saturday festival will include an auction and musical entertainment.

SERVICES

First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski will kick off Christian Education Week with a communion and vesper service by the Rev. Dr. Collier S. Harvey of Salem, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a barbeque supper at 5 p.m. and a hymn sing at 6 p.m. 980-5191.

Christiansburg's Holy Spirit Catholic Church will celebrate Mass at 7 p.m. today Our Saviour Lutheran Church on Cambria Street. Note that Mass will begin meeting at 5 p.m. beginning Sept. 16, and Religious Education sign-up is Wednesday, from 6 to 7 p.m. This week's readings will be Wisdom 9: 13-18; Psalm 90: 3-6, 12-17; Philemone 9-10, 12-17; Luke 14: 25-33; and Psalm 118: 135. 382-6844.

Blacksburg's Metaphysical Chapel on Church and Lee Streets will host Chris Faulconer, who will speak on "Fruits of Labor" at 7 p.m. Sunday. Tuesday Bill Sydor will conduct a "Spiritual Photography" class at 7 p.m. Wednesday Chris Faulconer will teach the art of storytelling at 7 p.m. Also Wednesday, Estill Putney and John Dumais will conduct a "Celestine Prophecy" workshop at 7 p.m. 231-5446.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, on Gladewood Road in Blacksburg, will host Barry Whittemore, who will talk on "U Who? Who Cares? A Look at Unitarian Universalism's Identity and Future" at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. At 8:45 a.m., Bob Stuart of the Coalition for Community will lead a discussion on Interfaith Caregivers during a roundtable. 552-2717.

First Missionary Baptist Church in New River will celebrate the second anniversary of Pastor Ronald Brown today at 5 p.m. A special musical will be performed and refreshments will be served. On Sunday, the Rev. Lee Suggs and the choir from Schaffer Memorial Baptist Church will be the guests at the 4 p.m. service. 639-6947.

Floyd Baptist Church will have fellowship and entertainment today and Sharing Memories at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by worship at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon.

The Christiansburg Church of Christ will have gospel lessons Sunday through Thursday. Sunday's schedule includes a Bible class at 10 a.m., morning worship at 11 a.m., and evening worhship at 7 p.m., with lessons at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 382-3629.

Bible Study Fellowship, an interdenominational group for women, will begin its 1995-1996 session Wednesday at 9:10 a.m. at Blacksburg First Wesleyan Church on Giles Road. Child care is available. Blacksburg's Jewish Community Center will celebrate the Jewish New Year and the Day of Atonement later this month and in October. Celebrations for the New Year will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 24, and at 10 a.m. Sept. 25 and 26. The Day of Atonement will marked at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 and 10 a.m. Oct. 4. HOMECOMINGS

Radford Pentecostal Holiness Church will celebrate Homecoming and mark 85 years in the community Sunday. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Phillip Genetti from Black Mountain, N.C., a former church pastor.

Big Spring Baptist Church on Roanoke Road in Elliston will celebrate homecoming following morning worship Sunday. 268-5650.

Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), on Second and Carter Streets, will have homecoming Sunday, with the Rev. Charles Taylor as guest speaker. Sunday School will be at 10 a.m., worship will be at 11 a.m., and lunch will be at 12:15 p.m.

The Adult Sunday School class of Morgans Chapel United Methodist Church in New River will have its annual hotdog and hamburger supper and cakewalk today at 6 p.m. 639-0324.

Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg will hold its 14th annual Salad Luncheon Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the United Methodist Church. Tickets are $4, and doorprizes will be available. Proceeds will help needy people in Giles County. 921-2438.

Copper Hill Church of the Brethren will have Fall Festival Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature an auction, food, a bake sale, crafts, and music. 651-4897.

Straight Street and the Pentecostal Holiness Appalachian Conference will host Youth Ralley III, featuring recording artist Harvest, Sept. 19 from 3:30 - 9 p.m. at Camp Maranatha, the Pentecostal Holiness campground near Dublin. On Sept. 20, Straight Street will sponsor a "See you at the Pole" prayer meeting in which students will gather at their schools' flag pole at 7 a.m. to pray. 381-1006.

Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding. Donations will be used to go to a youth conference. 382-4318.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford is having a food outreach on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Hall in Fairlawn. Food boxes will be available first come, first served to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.
