LAUREL PARK BEATS GRETNA IN 2ND HALF

Laurel Park turned a close game into a comfortable victory with strong defense in the second half as it defeated Gretna 57-41 in a high school girls' basketball game Thursday night.

Senior guard Tonya Martin led the Lancers with 15 points.

Guard Crystal Boyd led the Hawks with 14.

Fieldale-Collinsville 56, Chatham 44: In Chatham, Fieldale-Collinsville outscored Chatham by 15 points in the second quarter on the way to a Piedmont District victory.

The Cavaliers (3-2 overall, 2-0 in the Piedmont) were paced by T.J. Hayes with 16 points, Yvonne Hall with 12 and Rayni Cook with 11.

Castlewood 52, George Wythe 49: In Castlewood, visiting George Wythe lost center Tabitha Cook in the fourth quarter to a leg injury and couldn't muster up enough to pull out the win, as the Maroons fell to Hogoheegee District rival Castlewood.

Kelly Sayler led Castlewood (2-2) with a game-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils in the win.

Despite her injury, Cook scored 11 points for George Wythe. Megan Johnson led the Maroons with 12 points and Tonya Cregger added 10 in the loss.

Wilson Memorial 83, Bath County 33: In Fishersville, Wilson Memorial lept to a 29 point first-quarter lead and Bath County never caught up, as the Green Hornets blew out the Chargers in a non-district game.

Courtney Franklin led Wilson Memorial (3-0) with 19 points, 16 of which came in the first quarter. Dawn Major scored 17 points, Courtney Saundrell chipped in 13, and Erin Perry and Vanessa Hartley each added 10.

Melanie Woods led Bath County (1-2) with 13 points in the losing effort.
