HOLLINS HIRES NEW COACH IN BASKETBALL

Hollins College's women's basketball program got a major boost Friday when Karen Jenkins-Harvey, the 1991 Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year, signed on as its head coach.

Jenkins-Harvey played from 1987-91 at Roanoke College, helping the Maroons to three ODAC titles. She earned All-America honors and had her number retired as a senior.

``We feel like she will continue our forward progress,'' said Lynda Calkins, Hollins' athletic director.

Jenkins-Harvey had been working as a personal trainer while volunteering as an assistant girls' basketball coach at William Byrd High School, her alma mater. She replaces Kellie Kennedy, who left Aug.10 to be an assistant coach at Richmond.

Calkins estimated she received 50-60 applications for the job. Part of Jenkins-Harvey's hiring process included an interview by a student panel.

``The students seem to be responding positively,'' Calkins said.

Kennedy went 7-41 in two seasons at the helm. She did, however, actively recruit off campus and brought in some prospects.

``Karen is heavily and actively involved in recruiting right now,'' Calkins said. ``It's going to be a transition year without a doubt. Even in a transition year, you should not be standing still.''

Hollins is not standing still in its search for a field hockey/lacrosse coach, either. Although she has no experience, Calkins is filling the position right now, but the interview process is winding down and a new hire will be announced soon.

Calkins also coaches the school's swim team.
