PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY CAR MAY HAVE BEEN TRANSIENT

Police believe a man killed after he walked into traffic on North Franklin Street near McDonald's was a transient from Wisconsin.

But his name has not been released because authorities have to do a bit of investigating to make sure of the man's identity. The man carried no identification and no next of kin has been found.

The accident happened Tuesday at about 9:45 p.m. near the entrance to Northgate Mall, police said.

According to the car's driver and passenger, the man was walking east across the roadway toward McDonald's as they traveled north in the left lane.

Sonya R. Gills, 23, swerved to avoid the man but struck him with her car's right front fender and windshield.

According to the accident report, Gills - shaken up and scared - stopped the car near Cambria Street in the turn lane. Damage to her car was estimated at $2,000. No charges have been filed.

The man died a short time later at Montgomery Regional Hospital, Chief Ron Lemons said.
