SNEAD IN SENIORS FIELD AT HOMESTEAD

Four of the top five money winners on the Senior PGA Tour and 1995 U.S. Senior Open champion Tom Weiskopf will be among the 10-man field for the Merrill Lynch Senior Shoot-Out Championship on Sept.19 at The Homestead.

The field includes Hot Springs' own J.C. Snead, who ranks fifth on the money list.

The PGA announced eight of the 10 participants, with the other two expected to be named by Monday. The tour's top money winner, Jim Colbert, and Dave Stockton, ranking third, also are in the field.

The others are Snead, Weiskopf, Hale Irwin, Larry Laoretti, Jim Albus and Bruce Crampton. Albus and Crampton are in the field as the leaders of the annual Merrill Lynch series. Weiskopf, Irwin and Laoretti are sponsor invitees.

The $500,000, one-day event will be played on the par-70 Cascades course. The nine-hole format eliminates the player with the highest score on each hole until two golfers remain to play for the title on No.9. ESPN is taping the event for a two-hour show airing on Christmas Day.

There is no admission charge for spectators, although there is a $10 parking fee. Transportation from parking lots to the course will be provided by The Homestead.

In other sports news:

The Town of Buchanan baseball field will be named today for Toler Ransone in a 2 p.m. ceremony at the Low Street diamond. Ransone, 90, is the town's best-known baseball figure and was a longtime youth coach.

Ransone was inducted to the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year. The town ceremony today will include the unveiling of a bronze monument to Ransone at the park, and is also the start of fund-raising plans for the facility.

The Buchanan downtown revitalization office will issue the first in a series of three limited edition pen-and-ink prints on the town's history. The first print is of a 1923 photo of Ransone. Only 40 prints will be issued, at $100 each, with all of those funds donated to the revitalization of the ballpark. Ransone will autograph the prints purchased.

Five track championships are riding on the outcome of Sunday afternoon's races at New River Valley Speedway.

Double points will be awarded in all divisions of the Heritage Olds, Buick, Pontiac, GMC 200, which takes the green flag at 3 p.m.

Only a few points separate the front-runners. Jeff Agnew has only a 10-point lead over Ray Young in the Late Model Stock division. Four points separate the top three drivers in the Mod Mini competition, Jimmy Hinkley, K.J. Bishop and Charlie Smith.

Sunday's winners will receive 100 points with a drop of two points per position throughout the field.

Gates open at 10 a.m., with practice at noon. Qualifying is at 1:30 with the first of six races at 3. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

Weegie Glendenning had a pair of second-half goals to lead Hollins (1-0) to a 4-0 women's soccer victory over Warren Wilson (0-1).
