BIG QUARTER LIFTS FRANKLIN COUNTY

Travis Kent ran for two of Franklin County's four second-quarter touchdowns as the Eagles routed Laurel Park 35-12 on Friday night in a non-district game in Martinsville.

Kent had scoring runs of 33 and 1 yards. K.C. Hancock scored the Eagles' third touchdown when he picked off a pass by Laurel Park's Dallas Hairston and ran it back 42 yards. Shaun Ferguson capped the scoring when he caught a 28-yard pass from Grey Hodges.

Laurel Park (0-1) scored in the first and third quarters, first on a 28-yard pass from Hairston to Josh Crabtree, then on a 16-yard pass from Hairston to Crabtree.

Franklin County (1-1) completed the scoring with a 4-yard run by Henry Eggleston. Matt Maxey made the point-after kick, his fifth of the evening.

Parry McCluer 10, Alleghany 9: Despite an outstanding night of passing for Mountaineers freshman Shannon Johnson, the Fighting Blues held off Alleghany in a non-district matchup.

Parry McCluer's D.J. Douglas led the ground attack with 21 carries for 108 yards, and Sheldon Douglas ran 17 times for 65 yards. The Fighting Blues (1-1) scored all 10 of their points in the first half.

Johnson rallied his team in the second before finishing 10-of-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Oliver Jordan appeared to give Alleghany (0-2) a lead in the second quarter with a 50-yard punt return, but an illegal block in the back negated the touchdown.

Richlands 13, Christiansburg 7: In Richlands, the Tornadoes faced a loss with less than a minute left on the clock, but managed to block a punt and punch the ball into the end zone to pull out the non-district victory over the Blue Demons.

Trailing 7-6 With 38 seconds left, Richlands blocked a punt from inside the Christiansburg 10-yard line. With 10 seconds left, Aarron McCommons plunged in from the 2-yard line for his second touchdown of the night, to give the Tornadoes (2-0) the victory. McCommons finished the game with 57 yards on 18 carries.

Ricky Williams scored the lone touchdown for Christiansburg (0-2) on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

William Byrd 19, Bassett 14: Frank English threw three touchdown passes as the Terriers (2-0) rallied for a non-district victory over the Bengals (0-1) in Bassett.

English hit Michael Berry on a 17-yard slant for the first score in the first quarter, and then threw 35 yards to Jes Shrewsbury in the fourth and for 50 to Berry for the game-winner.

Carl Watkins ran for a Bassett touchdown in the third quarter, and Chauncey Norman recovered a fumble in the end zone in the final quarter.

Covington 14, Riverheads 13: In Covington, the Cougars batted away a two-point conversion pass to preserve a one-point non-district victory over the Gladiators.

Despite dominating the statistics, Covington (1-1) led only 14-7.

Riverheads (0-1) closed to 14-13 on Larry Neff's 1-yard touchdown run with 5:09 left. The Gladiators went for two, but quarterback Joe Williams' pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage.

William ``Boo'' Stewart, whose 13-yard run provided Covington's first touchdown, led the Cougars with 157 yards on 10 carries. Covington outgained Riverheads 289-136.

Rockbridge County 14, Robert E. Lee-Staunton 0: In Lexington, the Wildcats used a strong defensive effort to defeat the Leemen in a non-district game.

Rockbridge County (2-0) was led by senior halfback Jimmy Moore, who gained 157 yards on 24 carries. Greg Stubblefield passed for 58 yards on eight completions.

The Wildcats held Lee (0-2) to 141 yards of total offense.

Fieldale-Collinsville 41, James River 12 In Buchanan, the Cavaliers took control from the opening kickoff, converting a Knights fumble into a Mancino Craighead field goal, and never looked back in non-district action.

Delvin Joyce led Fieldale-Collinsville with four touchdowns, including two on passes from Cavaliers quarterback Phillip Hairston. Hairston passed for 133 yards, 70 to Joyce, on 6-of-8 passing. The Cavaliers (1-0) converted all three of James River's turnovers into points, scoring on Tony Kidd's 29-yard fumble return and Joe Favero's 27-yard interception return.

Quarterback Travis Blankenship led James River (1-1), completing seven of 14 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Freddie Johnson hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and Brian Leflore was on the receiving end of an 81-yard touchdown strike in the third for the Knights.

Grayson County 7, Bland County 0: Chad Shaffner's 5-yard touchdown run just before halftime was the difference on the scoreboard as the Blue Devils edged the Bears in the Mountain Empire District.

Grayson's Chad McMillian set up the touchdown with a long punt return to Bland County's 44-yard line. Six plays later, the Blue Devils (1-1, 1-0) scored.

Bland County, however, had its chances. The Bears (1-1, 1-1) had the ball on Grayson's 16 before halftime, but time ran out. Then, with 49 seconds left in the game, Bland County drove to Grayson's 40 before John Sweet intercepted a pass at the 25.

Shaffner led the Blue Devils with 96 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 carries. Todd Moorehead rushed nine times for 90 yards for the Bears.

Bath County 43 Wilson Memorial15: In Hot Springs, the Chargers scored all of their points in the first half en route to a non-district rout of the Green Hornets.

Bath County (2-0) rolled up 164 yards rushing in the first quarter while holding Wilson Memorial of Fishersville (1-1) to 28 yards of total offense during the same span.

For the game, the Chargers outgained the Hornets 289 yards to 201.

Holston 28, Rural Retreat 27: The Cavaliers scored with 49 seconds left to notch a Hogoheegee District victory over the Indians.

Holston (1-1) was aided by a face-mask penalty and by a pass-interference penalty on fourth down.

Rural Retreat (0-2) had 370 yards of offense, but lost three fumbles and saw a pass interception returned 96 yards for a touchdown by Brandon Matheny of Holston.

Ronnie Six had 104 yards rushing and scored a touchdown for Rural Retreat, and Archie Arnold had two touchdowns for the Indians.

Travis Owens had two touchdowns for Holston, including the winning score from 9 yards.

Auburn 23, Craig County 0: The Hughes brothers came up big for the Eagles, combining for 107 yards rushing as Auburn blanked the Rockets in a non-district matchup.

David Hughes ran 17 times for 49 yards and Conrad had 15 attempts for 56 as the Eagles built a 9-0 halftime lead.

Auburn went to the pass in the second half, with quarterback Jason Phipps completing eight of nine for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Jason Blankenship had the play of the night for Craig County (0-2), a 51-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Narrows 30, Garden 14: In Oakwood, the Green Wave dominated in the second half to earn a non-district victory.

Keith Morris ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and Justin Rhodes added 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Narrows (1-1) pulled away from a 14-14 tie.

The Green Wave turned the tide when Chris Martin intercepted a Garden pass in the third quarter. Narrows, relying on a strong running game, amassed 305 yards on the ground.

David Dye scored all the points for Garden (0-2).

Northside 50, Carroll County 0: Junior John Doss rushed for three consecutive touchdowns to help the Vikings rout the Cavaliers in a non-district matchup.

Northside (1-1) scored four times before halftime, all on running plays, to finish Carroll County (0-2).

Doss scored on a 1-yard run to cap the scoring in the first half, then opened the third quarter with two more scampers, one for 57 yards and the other for 65.

The Vikings travel to Rockbridge County on Friday.
