Theater auditions

Auditions for three male roles in Horton Foote's ``Courtship'' will be held Sept. 11 and 12, at 7 p.m., in Randolph-Macon Woman's College's Thoresen Theatre, Lynchburg.

The male characters are in their early 20s and 40s or 50s. The play will be performed Oct. 26-30 in Thoresen Theatre.

Jack Hanna to visit

``Jungle'' Jack Hanna and his animal friends will be guests at a cocktail reception Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m. at Ralph Smith's Rockledge Estate on Mill Mountain. The event is hosted by Mill Mountain Zoo.

Hanna is director of the Columbus Zoo, which houses more than 6,000 animals, is host of ``Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures'' (seen locally on WDBJ-TV), and makes frequent appearances on national programs such as ``Good Morning, America,'' ``Late Night With David Letterman'' and ``Larry King Live.''

A donation of $100 or more is requested to attend the reception, which will benefit Mill Mountain Zoo's Snow Leopard Fund.

WDBJ is sponsoring Family Nite with Hanna on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the zoo. The zoo will reopen at 6:30 p.m. Regular admission rates will apply ($4, adults; $3.60, senior citizens; $2.75, under 12; under 2, free.

United Way kickoff

The United Way of Roanoke Valley will kick off its1995 fund-raising campaign with an informal football ``tailgate-style'' luncheon Monday at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.

Bart Starr, Super Bowl champion and former NFL coach, will be the featured speaker.

Tickets for the luncheon are $10 per person.

This year's fund-raising goal is $5 million. Contributions will help fund more than 70 health and human service programs that help people in need in the Roanoke Valley.

Playmakers auditions

Playmakers & Co. of Christiansburg will be casting 23 children and 10 adults for its winter production, ``The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.''

Auditions for ages 5 to 13 will be held Oct. 2-3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Playmakers Playhouse, University Mall, Blacksburg. Adults, ages 30-65, will audition Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Copies of the script are available at the Blacksburg and Christiansburg public libraries.

Dress in comfortable clothing for the auditions.

Major organ recital

The world's largest organ recital will be presented all across America on April 16, 1996, beginning at the same moment, 6 p.m. (Eastern time).

The event is in celebration of the 100th birthday of the American Guild of Organists.

All recitals will begin with J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and will include singing of the hymn, ``When In Our Music God Is Glorified.''

The local presentation will be held at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, 2330 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke.
