CHRISTIANSBURG - The New River Valley will celebrate its industries, which employ about one-third of the valley's work force, this week during the annual Industry Appreciation showcase Wednesday through Friday.
Wednesday's events include the 10 a.m. dedication of Edwards Hall, the New River Valley's Regional Center for Economic Development at New River Community College.
Wednesday afternoon will feature the dedication of the Dublin Industrial Park and a legislative forum, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Edwards Hall, featuring General Assembly candidates from the New River Valley.
An industry reception and showcase will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Edwards Hall. It will include product displays and information.
The industry showcase continues Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
Also Thursday the third annual Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament will be held at Draper Valley Golf Course, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That evening, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. will the fourth annual New River Ramble, a chance to meet other business and industry associates, at the Long Way Home amphitheater grounds in Radford.
High-tech venture to open new center
BLACKSBURG - Rep. Rick Boucher, D.-Abingdon, will be the keynote speaker at the ribbon cutting of the new Fiber & Sensor Technologies building in the Blacksburg Industrial Park, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
Founded in 1990 as a spinoff from Virginia Tech's Fiber and Electro-Optics Research Center, F&S has grown to 25 full-time employees and has an annual revenue of almost $2 million.
The company makes optical fiber-based sensors and instrumentation, passive and active optical fiber devices, and associated processing equipment. The firm's customers include more than 100 U.S. and international companies and government organizations.
Meetings to set legislative agenda
RADFORD - Area business owners are invited to legislative issue meetings that will identify business concerns that may be the basis for legislation during the 1996 session of the General Assembly.
The meetings will be from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the conference center at the Roanoke Airport Marriott.
Monday the topic will be environmental legislation; Tuesday, the focus will be on workers compensation.
Taxation will be topic for the meeting on Sept. 18; Sept. 19, human relations; Sept. 20, health care reform; and Sept. 21, regulation and paperwork.
The cost is $9 per person per session, which includes a Continental breakfast. The cost for four or more sessions is $7.50 per person per session.
