Junior Chris Chladek put the Hokies on the scoreboard eight minutes into the first half. Four minutes later, freshman Matt Whalen made the score 2-0 on a rebound off St. Joseph's goalie Sean Vleet. Adam Johnson got an assist from Whalen and Matt Sleightholm in the 26th minute to finish Tech's first-half scoring. In the 63rd minute, freshman Keith Stansfield scored off an indirect kick by Ernie Seerbo for Tech's final goal.
The win improves Tech to 2-1-1 overall, 2-0-1 in the Atlantic 10. St. Joseph's dropped to 0-4, O-1.

The Roanoke women's team dropped a non-conference decision to William Smith 2-0 in Geneva, N.Y.
After a scoreless first half, Megan Meagher notched the eventual game-winning goal midway through the second half. Julie Dwyer added a late goal to clinch the victory for the Herons.
Ian Spooner and Tommy Torres each scored a goal and registered an assist as the Radford men stayed unbeaten with a 4-1 victory over Georgia Southern at Radford.
The Highlanders (3-0-1) took the lead at the 15:46 mark as Richard Shepherd used an assist by Spooner to score. Torres scored his first career goal at the 48:20 mark before Che Henderson and Spooner finished tacked on goals for the Highlanders.
The Eagles (0-4) finally got on the scoreboard at 70:52 on a goal by Johan Soderstrom.
Washington and Lee freshman striker Sam Chase muscled in a goal during the 70th minute as the Generals opened their season with a 1-0 victory over Shenandoah (3-1-0).
W & L' s keeper, Anthony Mazzarelli, notched the shutout, making 12 saves in the process.
The Washington and Lee women's team started its season with a 6-1 loss to Kean College (2-0-0) as Noel Meeke registered a hat trick and assisted on two other goals.
Virginia Tech's women's team dropped its first Atlantic 10 Conference game, losing a 2-1 overtime decision to Duquesne.
The first half remained scoreless until the 37th minute, when the Dukes' Erin McKane netted a pass from Heather Border. The Hokies (1-3, 0-1) tied the contest in the second half on an unassisted goal by sophomore Melissa McCaughan.
McKane scored again in the first overtime period, netting an unassisted goal in the seventh minute.
Kelly Reischer scored four goals and added an assist as Radford women defeated Howard 8-0 at Radford.
Reischer knocked in an Amanda Lebo pass nine minutes into the game and the Highlanders never looked back as they went on to score all eight goals in the half. Kelly Moran, Jill McFarlane, Lebo and Megan Brooks also added goals.
Tech women win cross country meet
Virginia Tech's women's cross country team won the Western Carolina University Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C. The Hokies finished first with 46 points in the 13-team field.
Former Pulaski County High School standout Jennifer Pohlig covered the course in 18 minutes, 58.5 seconds to finish fifth overall and first among Tech runners.
The victory marks the second consecutive year the Virginia Tech women have won the meet.
