YELLOW JACKETS' OPENER A LOSS ON AND OFF FIELD

Randolph-Macon lost more than just a game in its opener Saturday at Franklin & Marshall.

Thieves entered the Yellow Jackets' locker room through a broken vent above a locked door and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, compact disc players and cash belonging to players during a 28-27 loss to the Diplomats. Also taken was the team's meal money for the trip from Lancaster, Pa., back to Ashland, police said.

The team estimated its losses at about $12,000.

``I can't say what I want to say about Franklin & Marshall in print,'' said Bryan Lewis, a Randolph-Macon senior.

The players discovered the theft at halftime.

``You would expect that it would be secure enough so you wouldn't have to worry about it,'' said Joe Riccio, the Yellow Jackets' coach.

Randolph-Macon was stunned again when Beau Eckert threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Mark Sernatinger, then ran for the two-point conversion with less than five minutes to play as Franklin &Marshall rallied from a seven-point deficit.

Bethany (W.Va.) 28, Bridgewater 14: Bob Fromm threw for one touchdown and ran for two as the Buffaloes dumped the homestanding Eagles in the opener for both squads.

Bridgewater's only scoring of the first half came on Erin Ball's 63-yard ramble just before halftime as the Eagles closed to 14-7.

Gettysburg 27, Hampden-Sydney 7: Joe Madigan caught eight passes for 118 yards and one touchdown and returned a punt 79 yards for a score as the Bullets ruined the Tigers' opener in Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers finished with 225 yards passing and 118 yards rushing, but lost the ball four times on interceptions and once on a fumble.
