SPIDERS SQUASH UMASS

Quarterback Jason Gabrels rushed for 120 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, to lead Richmond to a 21-7 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday.

Minoso Rodgers also sparked the ground-dominated Richmond offense with 127 yards rushing in the Yankee Conference opener for both teams.

The score was tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Spiders (2-0) scored twice in the fourth quarter.

The go-ahead touchdown came with only 10 seconds gone in the fourth as Richmond linebacker Shawn Barber forced a fumble on Vito Campanile's attempted pass from the UMass 25. The ball was batted back to the end zone, where Eric Goode recovered it for the score that put Richmond up 14-7.

UMass (0-1) scored on its first possession of the game, driving 81 yards in 11 plays.
