The symposium, ``Ben Owen: Career and Influence of a Southern Master Potter,'' will feature Dr. Charles G. Zug as the keynote speaker. Zug serves as the chair of the Curriculum in Folklore, a gradiate program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The gathering will also include Andrew Glasgow, assistant director of the Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville, N.C.; Mrs. Ira Julian, a collector of Ben Owen pottery; and Jill Severn, curator of ``New Ways For Old Jugs: Tradition and Innovation at the Jugtown Pottery,'' the current show of Owen's pottery at the college.
Also on hand will be Owen's grandson, Ben Owen III, who will discuss his grandfather's influence on his contemporary pottery.
The symposium's roundtable discussion will run from 3-5 p.m. and the keynote address will begin at 8 p.m. The event will be held in the Van Dyke Center on campus.
More than 50 pieces of his work are included in the pottery exhibit, which will run through Oct. 8. In addition to Owen's pieces, items made by his grandson are included.
