STUDENT HELD IN ATTACKS ON WOMEN

A University of Virginia student has been charged in two of nine attacks on area women since last year.

Christopher S. McAllister, 22, was arrested Friday night at his home in South Orange, N.J.

Charlottesville Police Lt. J.E. Harding said police suspect McAllister in at least eight of the assaults.

New Jersey police also suspect McAllister in six similar incidents in New Jersey.

Charlottesville police brought charges against McAllister for allegedly breaking into the homes of young women in October and May. In one incident, he is charged with intent to commit rape.

McAllister would have been in his fifth year at UVa as a sports medicine major if he had returned to classes this semester.

McAllister was charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a woman in Maplewood, N.J., on Aug. 11. He was released on bond until Friday, when police arrested him again, this time charging him with several counts of burglary along with two charges from Charlottesville. He is being held without bond in the South Orange, N.J., jail.

Maplewood police had contacted UVa police after running a background check. Charlottesville police obtained photos of McAllister and showed them to four victims, who identified him as the attacker, Harding said.

In most of the Charlottesville cases, a man entered an unlocked door in the early morning hours. The attacker had been stalking some of his victims, police said.

Charlottesville police at one time had as many as 14 patrol officers and detectives searching for the attacker. The department twice attempted a sting operation with undercover female officers.

McAllister was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in South Orange, N.J. Charlottesville police have asked that he be extradited as soon as possible to stand trial on the Virginia charges, Harding said.
