POLISH GROUP VISITS PULASKI

Three visitors from Poland, the country that gave birth to Revolutionary War hero Count Casimir Pulaski, last week toured the Virginia town and county named for their countryman.

Mayor Andy Graham greeted Andrzej Namyslo, Leszek Pogan and Grazyna Frister at the Pulaski Municipal Building along with Town Council members Alma Holston and John Stone. A tour of the premises followed, with the visitors showing the most interest in the workings of the Pulaski Police Department.

Police Chief Herb Cooley made a big hit with the three, and gave them caps and department shoulder patches as souvenirs of the town.

The visitors from Opole, a Polish city, also got a tour from Pulaski County Administrator Joe Morgan of the historic Old Courthouse. They were guests at a lunch at the Pulaski Train Station, during which Graham gave them keys to the town and train station mementoes.

Namyslo, who has a doctorate in mechanical engineering, is a member of the engineering faculty at Opole Polytechnic College. He is serving his first term on Opole City Council, and has been its chairman for a year.

Pogan, a professor of history, has been the mayor of Opole since July 1994.

Frister has been Opole's city clerk for seven years. Although educated in music, she has worked in public administration for 18 years.

The visitors were accompanied by Zbigniew Bartkiewicz, who acted as interpreter. The group is in the United States as part of the "Manager to Manager" exchange program sponsored by the Virginia Local Government Management Association and supported by a grant from the U.S. Information Agency.
