MAN DIES AFTER CRASH DURING CHASE

A Virginia State Police trooper was seriously injured and a man was killed in a crash that occurred while the officer was pursuing a car, authorities said.

John P. Shenk Sr., 59, of Elkton, died of injuries he suffered in the accident Sunday on Interstate 81 near the overpass of Virginia 660, said Sgt. William Hill.

Trooper Michael D. Spangler was in satisfactory condition Monday in Bristol Regional Hospital in Bristol, Tenn., after surgery for neck and back injuries.

Hill said the trooper was pursuing another vehicle when the crash occurred. It was not clear whether Shenk was driving or whether his vehicle was involved in the chase.
