The car driven by Donna E. Rose, 64, crossed the northbound lanes of Virginia 100 from Highland Road and was hit in the side by a patrol car driven by Deputy Joey Williams, according to Pulaski County Sheriff Ralph Dobbins.
Williams was driving north around noon after eating lunch in Dublin, Dobbins said. Deputies were spending the day at a firing range a few miles from the accident.
Trooper B.K. Owen said Rose ran a stop sign on Highland and was struck by Williams before she made it to the median crossover.
The left side of her car was smashed in almost to the passenger seat.
Dobbins said his deputy was a bit disoriented after the accident but was not seriously injured. The air bag in the patrol car did not deploy, even though the front end was badly damaged.
Owen said he wasn't sure how fast the cars were traveling.
Rose had left Albert's Auto Repair shop on Highland before the collision. Dave Albert said Rose had brought her car in for repairs on occasion. This time, she had come from her home in Wythe County to ask about fixing the transmission on her daughter's car.
