COAL PRODUCTION UP, REPORT SAYS

Domestic coal production totaled 20.7 million tons during the week ending Sept. 2, up 2 percent from the 20.3 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 21.2 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Wyoming ranked first among the 27 coal-producing states with 3.9 million tons produced. Kentucky was second with 3.5 million tons and West Virginia was third with 3.4 million tons, the agency said.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 676 million tons, less than 1 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.

The week's production accounts for bituminous and lignite coal.
