ROANOKE REGIIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The statistics suggest that new businesses are booming in the Roanoke Valley. But the truth is that the city of Roanoke is engaged in a drive to ferret out businesses operating without a license.

The indicator for new business licenses shot over the chart in August with 490 businesses taking out licenses for the first time. That compares with 155 in July, a typical number, and 250 in August a year ago.

Of the August number, 414 were in Roanoke City and 76 in Roanoke County.
