ROWLAND BACK WITH HIGHLANDERS

Former Radford lacrosse star Geoff Rowland has returned to the school as an assistant coach.

Rowland played for the Highlanders from 1990-94 as a midfielder. He captained the 1993 and 1994 teams and was a member of the 1993 Virginia state All-Academic team.

Rowland, from Huntingtown, Md., was an assistant coach with the Calvert Lacrosse Club last season and worked as a counselor and coach for the British Columbia Lacrosse Association Day Camp in 1993.

The Virginia Tech golf team is in third place after the first day of the 10th annual Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Hokies fired a 36-hole score of 586, trailing first-place Duke by 16 strokes.

Tech was led by Sean Farrell and freshman Chip Glover, who each shot a 1-over 145. The final 18 holes will be played today.

Radford's men's soccer team fell for the first time this season with a 4-2 loss at Appalachian State.

The Roanoke Star White team defeated the Roanoke Star Red 2-1 in a shootout for the under-15 boys championship in the Pepsi Arby's Autumn Tournament this past weekend.

The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation. Then it went two overtimes. Tom Ashton, Andy Starr, Travis Kyger and Phong Doung were named to the all-tournament team.

Former Olympian and NCAA champion Leigh Ann Fetter-Witt has been named head coach of the James Madison University women's swimming and diving team.

Fetter-Witt is the first woman in the world to break the 22-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle. Fetter-Witt comes to JMU after serving as an assistant coach at Florida State for the past two years.

The Dukes have won four titles in the Colonial Athletic Association.
