LORD BOTETOURT DROPS GLENVAR

Lord Botetourt outscored Glenvar 12-2 in the third quarter, and that was the difference in the Cavaliers' 56-46 non-district girls' high school basketball victory at Glenvar on Monday.

Sara Moore scored seven of her 10 points in the third, and Aimee Bird scored five of her 11 in the third to lift Lord Botetourt (5-0).

Sarah Hicks led the Cavaliers in scoring with 20 points.

Amanda Kennedy led Glenvar (1-4) with 16 points, and Amy Layman and Erika Hale each scored 11. Hale added 10 rebounds.

Northside 64, Covington 43: At Covington, Amy Heath scored 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter as the Vikings jumped out to a 20-5 lead and cruised to the victory.

Covington (2-1) played without starting post Michelle Jeter, who missed the game with a sprained ankle. Jeter, an all-district performer last season, also will not play in tonight's game against Stuarts Draft.

Rosse Hopkins added 13 points for Northside (2-3).

Joanne Helton led Covington with 20 points. The Cougars had only seven players available for action.

Salem 62, Blacksburg 37: Salem's Shellie Johnson scored 20 of her game-high 26 points in the first half as the Spartans downed the Indians in a non-district game.

Salem (3-0) enjoyed repeated offensive spurts, some due to turnovers off a strong half-court press.

The Indians made some progress in the third quarter, but Sarah Palmer grabbed 12 rebounds to go with her nine points to build Salem's cushion.

Bethany Johnson and Karly Geller each had eight points to lead Blacksburg.

Rural Retreat 60, Grayson County 52: Kristie Osborne scored 11 of her 23 points in the last period as the Indians downed the Blue Devils in a non-district game at Rural Retreat.

Rural Retreat (3-0) outscored Grayson County 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 32-17 halftime lead. However, the Indians came out cold in the third quarter and the Blue Devils cut the lead to 10. Osborne hit three baskets and five free throws in the fourth quarter to lead Rural Reteat to victory.

Jane Grubb had 10 rebounds for the Indians.

Lindsey Carico scored 18 points for Grayson County (0-5) and Sally Werth added 13.

Narrows 52, Shawsville 43: Suzanne Webb scored 14 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Green Wave rolled past the Shawnees in a non-district contest in Narrows.

After a slow start, Shawsville went on a 22-11 run in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead. Narrows' Becky Turner hit two baskets at the end of the period to cut the deficit to 8. Webb then helped the Green Wave (3-0) put away the game
