HORNETS COME TO RICHMOND, GREENSBORO

It's going to take a collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players first, but the Charlotte Hornets are scheduled to play preseason games in Greensboro and Richmond, Va., in October.

In addition to two dates at the Charlotte Coliseum, three road games and a date with the Los Angeles Lakers in Las Vegas, Nev., the Hornets are scheduled to meet Detroit on Oct. 20 at the Greensboro Coliseum and finish their exhibition schedule Oct. 26 at the Richmond Coliseum against Philadelphia.

The schedule:

Oct.12, at Phoenix; Oct.14, at San Antonio; Oct.17, LA Lakers at Las Vegas; Oct.19, Denver; Oct. 20, Detroit at Greensboro, N.C.; Oct.22, Phoenix; Oct.27, at New Jersey; Oct.28, Philadelphia at Richmond.

In other sports in the region:

Virginia Tech's women's basketball schedule will be highlighted by the Atlantic 10 tournament March 1-4 in Cassell Coliseum.

In their first season in the A-10, the Hokies will play 16 conference games and will take on five in-state rivals and participate in two December tournaments, including the Diamond Club Classic Dec. 29-30 at Cassell Coliseum.

Tech will play in the Woodlands Plaza/KVNA Classic at Flagstaff, Ariz., Dec. 19-20.

In addition to home-and-away series with the A-10's West Division, Tech will play at Radford Nov. 29, at Virginia Dec. 6 and will host Virginia Commonwealth Dec. 9 and Richmond Jan. 7. (Complete schedule in Scoreboard. B4.)

Rob McNamara of Charlottesville won the Middle Atlantic PGA Southern Chapter Championship at the Homestead in Hot Springs.

Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock Golf Club and Billy King of Blue Hills were fourth and fifth, respectively.

McNamara, the reigning AMS Signet Open champion, fired 69s on Monday and Tuesday for a 138 total, four strokes better than the second-place duo of Phil Stewart and Mike Moyers.

Sullivan shot 71-72 143 and King fired a 75-70 145.

Glen Miller of Fort Washington shot a 143 to win the Middle Atlantic PGA Central Chapter Member Championship at Cress Creek Golf Club.

Second-round leader Duke fired a four-man total of 305 to win the three-day Kiawah Island (S.C.) Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on the par-72 Osprey Point Golf Links.

Virginia Tech shot a 298 on Tuesday to finish third overall with an 875, eight shots behind the University of Charleston (S.C.). On Tuesday, Tech was led by Robbie Rasmussen (72), David Havens (74), and Chip Glover and Sean Farrell (76 each). Glover and Farrell finished with three-day totals of 221, tied for 17th. Danny Simmerman of Northern Florida was medalist with a 4-under-par 212.
