PARTIES DRAW RADFORD COUNCIL'S IRE|

Noisy parties held by Radford University students and fueled by alcohol are a continuing irritant for local residents, but Radford City Council and city officials could find no single solution for coping with the problem during a brief meeting Monday night.

City Manager Robert Asbury said the city has been addressing the problem on an ongoing basis. He suggested forming a task force to address the problems.

Councilman Bill Yerrick said one way to help monitor the problem would be to have more police officers on patrol.

But the police are doing their best and they can't be everywhere at once, countered Councilman David Worrell.

Councilwoman Polly Corn suggested limits on the number of people who could be at a party.

Such an ordinance would apply to her parties, too, warned City Attorney Bunny Spiers.

Corn also suggested asking Del. Tommy Baker, R-Dublin, and Sen. Bo Trumbo, R-Fincastle, to work to restore limits to how much alcohol could be bought at one time.

Excessive alcohol use is a multifaceted problem, council members agreed, and to solve that problem, it must be addressed by many people in multiple fields.

In other business Monday, council:

Voted to appropriate $17,000 to complete maintenance and repairs to the U.S. 11 bridge at Plum Creek.

Declared this week as "Industry Appreciation Week."

Announced a meeting with the School Board at the city library Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. to discuss funding and capital projects.
