RICHMOND - The Virginia Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that people whose jobs cause them to get carpal tunnel syndrome can collect workers compensation benefits.
In a 2-1 ruling, the intermediate appeals court said the painful wrist condition caused by repetitive motion is a disease, not an injury.
The court affirmed the Workers' Compensation Commission's award of benefits to Thea B. McCutchan, who came down with carpal tunnel syndrome while packing chicken nuggets at a Perdue Farms Inc. plant.

Store manager shot at Danville mall
DANVILLE - A jewelry store manager remained hospitalized Tuesday after he was shot in the chest Monday trying to stop shoplifting suspects.
Chang Lee, 37, had just opened the N.Y. Gold store in Piedmont Mall when three or four men enter the store. Lee suspected them of shoplifting, so he followed them out of the store. When he asked one of the men to stop, the man turned and shot Lee, Danville Police Maj. B.C. Elliott said.
Lee staggered to another nearby jewelry store, where workers Carolyn Jones and Pat Hankins cared for him until paramedics arrived.
Lee underwent surgery Monday evening at Danville Regional Medical Center. Hospital officials declined to disclose Lee's condition Tuesday.
