GILES TOO STRONG FOR BLAND 66-26

Pachess Umbarger had a game-high 14 points to finish with more than half of Bland's total, but Giles thumped the Rockets 66-26 in a girls' basketball game Wednesday night in Bland.

The Spartans bolted to a 32-18 lead at halftime and poured it on in the third quarter to leave no doubt as to the game's outcome.

Kristen White (12 points) and Melissa Cumbee (11) led the way for Giles. Bland (1-3) had no other player with more than four points.

Wilson Memorial 77, Bath County 36: Erin Peery scored 22 points and Dawn Major hit four 3-point goals to lead the Green Hornets to a non-district win at Hot Springs. Jennifer Adams led Bath County (1-4) with nine points. Wilson Memorial is 5-0.

Tuesday's games

Eastern Mennonite 79, Highland 44: In Harrisonburg, Michelle Weaver scored 30 points to lead Eastern Mennonite (2-3) to victory over the Rams (0-2).

George Wythe 75, Holston 40: The Maroons came up with 21 steals to fuel the Hogoheegee District rout over the visiting Cavaliers.

Megan Johnson had 17 points, seven rebounds, and six steals, Alethea Lemieux chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds, and freshman Tabitha Cook added 11 for George Wythe (2-2 overall, 1-2 in the district).

Liberty 37, Altavista 33: In Altavista, Suelynn Cowlbeck drained a pair of free throws with two seconds to seal a Seminole District victory.

Cowlbeck went eight of 10 from the line for the night and led the Minettes with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Rural Retreat 41, PH-Glade Spring 29: In Glade Spring, visiting Rural Retreat overcame a slow first quarter to capture a Hogoheegee District victory.

Kristie Osborn led the Indians (4-0, 3-0) with 12 points in the come-from-behind win.

Stuart's Draft 57, Covington 35: In Stuart's Draft, the host Cougars jumped out to a 22-5 first quarter lead and never looked back as they blasted visiting Covington.

Joann Helton led Covington with a game-high 21 points.
