CAVALIERS CLOBBER HOKIES 7-1

Virginia scored the first six goals of the game and went on to beat Virginia Tech 7-1 in a men's soccer game at UVa's Klockner Stadium.

The Cavaliers, who improved to 18-0 all-time against Tech, led 2-0 at halftime behind Matthew Leonard's two goals. Virginia got goals from five players in the second half.

Trailing 6-0, Tech (3-2-1) got on the board when Matt Whalen netted an unassisted goal at the 77:01 mark.

Michael Maire scored the game-winning goal at the 70:46 mark to lift VMI (2-3) to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Richmond at Lexington. Eleven minutes after Richmond (3-2) tied the score at 1 on Asgeir Asgeirsson's goal, Maire scored after Rich Daughtridge's shot was deflected to Phillip Harper, who found Maire in front of the goal.

Bill Sigler scored a goal and assisted on another as Washington and Lee rolled to a 3-0 win over Marymount University in a non-conference men's soccer game in Lexington.

Anival Avalos scored two goals - one in each half - to lead Roanoke College past Guilford 2-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer game.

The Maroons goalkeeper, Rick Keeley, got the shutout by making just one save.

Tim Rice scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Eastern Mennonite outlasted Ferrum 3-2 in a men's soccer game in Harrisonburg.

Emerson Uruana and Kevin Chenosky scored for Ferrum.

Campbell's Kasey Monroe and Bonnie Trader scored goals two minutes apart midway through the second half to lift the Camels to a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech in a women's soccer game in Blacksburg. Tech (1-4) led 1-0 at halftime after Denise Williams scored on Brooke Fuller's assist four minutes into the game.

Guilford scored three second-half goals to beat Hollins 3-0 in an ODAC women's soccer game. Guilford is 1-3, 1-2, Hollins is 1-1, 0-1.

In Sweet Briar, Ali Oglesby scored off an assist from Tina Boyce as Roanoke College ruined Sweet Briar's opener 1-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey. Jen Pohanka made three saves for the Maroons (2-0, 1-0).

Virginia Tech added two coaches to its track and field staff and elevated another coach to full-time status. Victoria Fulcher, a 1991 graduate of Illinois, was hired as an assistant women's track coach and Bruce Berry, a native of West Orange, N.J., has been hired as the men's track staff graduate assistant coach.

Mike Sergent, a native of Nokesville, Va., has been elevated to the position of full-time assistant coach for the women's team. Sergent, who has spent four years with the Hokies, will coach the throwing events and will be in charge of recruiting.
