Sportstalk from Tech

BLACKSBURG - WNFR 710 AM's John Hale will broadcast his show Sportstalk live from Virginia Tech 9-10 a.m. Saturday. A tailgate will follow the show.

Levi Garrett and the Kool Country gang will be at the Wilderness Trail Festival in Christiansburg Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Science seminars

BLACKSBURG - Following is a list of seminars offered by the Center for the Study of Science in Society at Virginia Tech for the week of Sept. 18:

"Reductionism vs. Holism vs. Mechanism," Wednesday at 4 p.m., 321 McBryde Hall. Keynote speaker: Robert Brandon, philosophy, Duke University. Co-sponsored with the Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech.

"On the Nature and Rhetoric of Interdisciplinarity," Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in 427 Major Williams Hall at Virginia Tech. Keynote speaker: Jim Collier, Center for the Study of Science in Society.

Behavior conference

RADFORD - The fourth Appalachian Conference on Behavioral Neurodynamics will be Sept. 22-25 at Radford University. The conference will examine the neurological and psychological processes involved in the relationship between the consequences of people's behavior and subsequent behavioral changes.

Brenda Miller, psychology professor at McGill University, is the keynote speaker. Miller will address the conference theme "Learning as Self Organization, Not Self Gratification."

Karl Pribram, director of Radford's Center for Brain Research and Information Sciences, is organizer of the conference. Pribram is a Radford University eminent scholar and renowned neuroscientist.

Conference deadline

RADFORD - Today is the deadline to register for the fifth Annual Appalachian Teachers' Network Conference at Radford University. The conference is scheduled for Sept. 23. The cost, which includes lunch, is $35 for nonnetwork members, $20 for network members or $10 for full-time Radford students.

Jim Wayne, a well-known novelist, poet, essayist and teacher, is the keynote speaker. Special guest Margaret Mackay, director of the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, will speak on the Appalachian-Scottish connection.

Operation Santa Claus|

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Mental Health Association in Blacksburg is looking for people with charity in their hearts to participate in Operation Santa Claus.

Participants will buy Christmas gifts for patients at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion. Many of the patients are indigent and have no family or friends.

The project requires shopping and at least $35 per patient. Pariticipants will receive a "wish list."

The Mental Health Association is accepting volunteers now. Commitments are needed by Oct. 27, and boxes are due by Nov. 17.
