SPARTAN EFFORT NOT ENOUGH THIS TIME

Salem knocked off two-time defending Group A champion Floyd County on Sept.5, but the Spartans didn't have enough to defeat defending Group AA champion R.E. Lee-Staunton.

Lee used a 12-3 run in the final 3:54 of the game to defeat Salem 48-41 on Thursday night in non-district action in Staunton.

The Spartans (3-1) faced a six-point deficit heading into the final quarter, but rallied to force a tie at 36. Tina Slate hit a 12-footer with a little less than four minutes to play, putting Salem up 38-36. Lee (3-5) then started its decisive run, converting eight of 10 free-throw attempts in the final three minutes.

Salem missed six of its final seven field-goal attempts after Slate's jumper. April Carico's 3-pointer, Salem's only basket in the final 28 seconds, pulled the Spartans to 45-41.

Jackie Wormsley led the Lee-Ladies with a game-high 13 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle Kiser added 12 points.

Carico and Mandy Williams scored 11 points each for Salem. Slate finished with eight points, as did Shellie Johnson.

Shawsville 49, Craig County 18: In Shawsville, the Shawnees converted 14 first-half turnovers by the Rockets into points as they built a 22-4 lead and rolled in a non-district matchup.

Sarah Haygood led the Shawnees (5-1) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Forster added 11 points.

Northside 45, Christiansburg 26: Crystal Barrett scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the first half to lead the Vikings past the Blue Demons in a non-district game in Christiansburg.
