RURAL RETREAT SURVIVES

Rural Retreat built a 12-point halftime lead and withstood a fourth-quarter surge by visiting Fort Chiswell to defeat the Pioneers 62-56 in non-district girls' basketball action Thursday night.

Rural Retreat used its press in the second quarter to build its halftime lead and then held on behind Kristie Osborn and a balanced offensive attack.

Osborn led the Indians with 20 points and Jane Grubb added 12.

Tasha Smith led Pioneers scorers with a team-high 17 points. Kristen Harmen added 15 and Amber Gunter had 11, nine on 3-point field goals.

Martinsville 75, Laurel Park 65: Tresita Holland had nine of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs defeated the Lancers in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.

Martinsville (5-3, 3-1) got 18 points from Erica Brandon and 13 from Jamie Ferrington.

Laurel Park (2-2) got 17 points from Toy Perkins and 13 from Brandy Martin.

George Wythe 47, John Battle 36 Megan Johnson scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as George Wythe knocked off John Battle in a Hogoheegee District game in Bristol.

Johnson scored six in the second quarter and Lisa Garland added five of her eight points in the quarter as the Maroons (3-2, 2-2) rebounded from a poor-shooting first quarter. Alethea Lemieux grabbed 11 rebounds for the Maroons.

Carroll County 58, Grayson County 21: In Independence, Grayson County went on a 21-3 run in the fourth quarter to ice a non-district victory over Carroll County in the teams' third meeting of the year.

The Cavaliers' stingy defense forced 18 turnovers as Carroll County (5-2) built a 28-11 halftime lead. Jennifer Watkins led the fourth quarter surge with five of her game-high 12 points. Angie Farmer added 11 points.

Lindsay Carico led Grayson County (0-6) with nine points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 57, Magna Vista 53 T.J. Hayes and Yvonne Hall helped the Cavaliers get off to a quick start in a Piedmont District matchup in Ridgeway.

Hayes scored a game-high 17 points and Hall added 14 as the Cavaliers (4-0 district) led 30-20 at the half.

Tanesia Kellam paced Magna Vista (4-3, 3-1) with 11 points and Sandi Reid had seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter.

Rockbridge County 55, Highland 35: In Monterey, Highland held tough for a half, but Rockbridge County pulled away from the Rams for the second time this season.

Kate Ides led the Wildcats with a game-high 12 points.

Highland (0-3) converted only eight of its 22 free-throw attempts. Amy Neal led the Rams with 11 points.

Bassett 65, Chatham 41: In Chatham, Bassett built a 21-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Chatham in a Piedmont District game.

Freshman guard Heather Miller scored 27 points and added 16 rebounds and six assists for the Bengals (2-3, 2-2). Nine of her points came from beyond the 3-point line.

Tena Daye scored 18 points for the Cavaliers, all coming from beyond the arc.

\ Riverheads 46, Parry McCluer 40: The Gladiators took advantage of a huge disparity in free-throw attempts to defeat the Fighting Blues in a non-district matchup in Staunton.

Riverheads made 23 of 42 from the line; Parry McCluer was 4-of-5.

Lindsey Coleman scored 15 and Crystal Humphries had 13 for the Fighting Blues.

Galax 55, Graham 42: In Galax, the Maroon Tide broke open a tightly contested game with 17 third-quarter points to defeat Graham in a non-district game.

The Maroon Tide (6-0) was led by senior Tammy Cox who had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Mindy McGrady came off the bench to add10 points, eight in the decisive third quarter.

Shawsville 49, Craig County 18: In Shawsville, the Shawnees converted on 14 first-half Craig County turnovers as they built a 22-4 halftime lead and blasted the Rockets in a non-district game.

Shawsville used full-court pressure to shut out Craig County (0-3) in the first quarter and force numerous turnovers.

Sarah Haygood led the Shawnees (5-1) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Forster added 11 points and Staci Harless dished out five assists to go along with six points.

Northside 45, Christiansburg 26 Crystal Barrett scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the first half to lead Northside past the Blue Demons in a non-district game in Christiansburg.

Amy Heath added seven points and Samantha Webb had six for the Vikings (4-3).

Lisa Dalton led Christiansburg (3-4) with eight points.

Giles 52 Rocky Gap 48: In Pearisburg, the Spartans overcame poor shooting from the free-throw line to hold off Rocky Gap.

Giles (4-1) shot a dismal 10-of-30 from the line, which allowed the Eagles (0-7) to stay in the game.

Sophomore center Kristen White led the Spartans with 11 points and five rebounds. Gina Claytor added nine points and led the Spartans with 12 rebounds.

Amanda Clark paced the Eagles with 12 points.

Alleghany 70, Covington 59: In Low Moore, Natasha Chapman gunned in 34 points to lead the Mountaineers to a non-district victory over the Cougars.

Chapman had 12 points in the second quarter and 11 in the third as Alleghany (4-3) seized control. The Mountaineers switched defenses at halftime and outscored Covington 18-5 in the third quarter.

Katie Craft added 17 points for the winners.

Covington (2-3) got 14 points from Lakeisha Jackson.

Liberty 42, Staunton River 21 Kellea Whorley scored eight of her 12 points in the first quarter as Liberty bolted out to a 16-point lead en route to a Seminole District win in Bedford.

Sue Cowlbeck finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Minettes (4-1, 4-1).

Staunton River (2-2, 2-2) was led by Missy Foxx, who scored seven points.

Radford 59, Bland 19: In Bland, Charlee Taylor outscored the Rockets by herself in leading Radford to a non-district victory.

Taylor had 23 points and the Bobcats led 34-11 at halftime.

Three Bland players, including Pachess Umbarger, had four points each.
