LUTHERANS AND FRIENDS GATHER TONS OF SPUDS FOR THE HUNGRY

Members and friends of Our Saviour Lutheran Church on Cambria Street in Christiansburg are now, no doubt, well starched. Last Saturday, 38 people helped gather 5,215 pounds of potatoes, enough to fill 149 bags.

The potatoes, along with canned goods and donated auction items, will support area hunger ministries. The church's Potato Harvest Festival is Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fest will feature entertainment, games and refreshments.

SERVICES

Christiansburg's Holy Spirit Catholic Church will celebrate Mass at 5 p.m. today at Our Saviour Lutheran Church on Cambria Street. Registration for religious education is still open. The first class meets Sept. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. This week's readings will be Exodus 32: 7-11, 13-14; Psalms 51: 3-4, 12-13, 17, 19; 1 Timothy 1: 12-17; Luke 15: 1-32; 2 Corinthians 5:19.

The First Church of God on Canaan Road in Christiansburg will have a worship service and Christians Broadcasting Hope rally at Camp Christi Sunday. 382-6350.

Blacksburg's Metaphysical Chapel on Church and Lee Streets will host Dawn Coe, who will speak on "Michaelmas" at 7 p.m. Sunday. Wednesday, Chris Faulconer will teach the second segment in the art of storytelling at 7 p.m. Also Wednesday, Estill Putney and John Dumais will conduct the second in a series of workshops on the "Celestine Prophecy" at 7 p.m. 231-5446.

Pentecostal Holiness Church on Phlegar Street in Christiansburg will have a revival continuing tonight at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. 382-9429.

The Senior Choir of the First Baptist Church on West Street in Radford will celebrate its 124th anniversary Sunday at 3 p.m. The guest speaker will be the Rev. William Lee, pastor of Loudon Avenue Christian Church in Roanoke.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, on Gladewood Road in Blacksburg, will host the Rev. Alvord Beardslee, who will talk on "New Views on the Role of Women in the Bible" at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. At 8:45 a.m., Larry Landrum will lead a roundtable discussion on if there is an inalienable right to have children. 552-2717.

First Baptist Church on Third Avenue and Downey Street in Radford will have a revival Sunday through Wednesday. Services Sunday will be at 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m. each night. The Rev. James Baucom, a pastor of First Baptist Church from 1971 to 1979, will lead the services. 639-4419.

St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church will have homecoming Sept. 24 with worship services at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Rev. Elizabeth Scott, a candidate for Bishop at the past three general conferences of the AME church, who is pastor of two churches in Greensburg, Pa., and a doctoral candidate in theology at Duquesne University, will speak during morning services. In the afternoon, Nikki Giovanni, a professor of English at Virginia Tech and an internationally known poet, will speak. The West Radford Church of God will honor the church's senior adults Sept. 24 with a special service at 11 a.m. The. Rev. S.H. Landreth, national senior adult of the year, will deliver the message at the service. 639-6562.

Blacksburg's Jewish Community Center will celebrate the Jewish New Year and the Day of Atonement later this month and in October. Celebrations for the New Year will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 24, and at 10 a.m. Sept. 25 and 26. The Day of Atonement will be marked at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 and 10 a.m. Oct. 4. The Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Second and Carter Streets will have a revival Oct. 8-10. Services will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 and at 7:15 p.m. each night. The guest speaker will be Ed Parrish Jr., from Columbia, Va., 639-3126.

HOMECOMINGS

Calvary United Methodist Church on South Franklin Street in Christiansburg will have homecoming Sunday at 9 a.m., with a potluck lunch at 1 p.m. Music will be by Melissa Hunter and The Kingdom's Heirs. 382-7932.

First Wesleyan Church on Giles Road in Blacksburg will celebrate homecoming Sunday. The Rev. Clarence Williams from Shelby, N.C., will be the guest speaker and The Southern Sounds will perform. Sunday School is at 10 a.m. and worship is at 11 a.m., with dinner at noon and music at 2 p.m. 552-4924.

Straight Street and the Pentecostal Holiness Appalachian Conference will host Youth Rally III, featuring recording artist Harvest, Tuesday from 3:30 - 9 p.m. at Camp Maranatha, the Pentecostal Holiness campground near Dublin. On Sept. 20, Straight Street will sponsor a "See you at the Pole" prayer meeting in which students will gather at their schools' flag pole at 7 a.m. to pray, 381-1006.
