Cherry Hill Club deadline extended

Organizers of the proposed Cherry Hill Club have set Sept. 20 as their deadline for soliciting members for the proposed sports and dining facility.

A letter received Friday by 3,000 families in Roanoke and Roanoke County said next Wednesday is the final deadline for buying a membership. Barton J. Wilner, who is leading the drive to sign up 300 families in order to establish the club, said Friday that the property's owner, Carilion Health System, extended until Wednesday the organizers' option to buy the South Roanoke mansion.

About 160 families have already signed up, Wilner said.

If the goal of 300 is reached by Wednesday, the club will go forward, he said. If the drive falls short on that date, "then it's over."

Only 65 families had signed up before Labor Day weekend, when organizers voted to drop the initiation fee to $1,000 and the dues to $100 a month. Any interested person can call Wilner at 982-1959 or deliver a check for the initiation fee to his home at 2709 Crystal Spring Ave.

VF Corp. expects big earnings drop

VF Corp., Wyomissing, Pa., parent of Bassett-Walker Inc. of Martinsville, said Friday it expects third-quarter earnings to be 20 to 25 percent below 1994 levels, citing poor sales in the back-to-school selling season. VF intends to cut production.

"The back-to-school season - typically a high-volume period for VF - unexpectedly stalled this year, falling far short of our plans and expectations," said chairman Lawrence Pugh.

"Possible reasons include exceptionally warm weather in much of the country and consumers buying closer to need. Whatever the cause, the result is that we are initiating aggressive action to curtail both production and inventory," he said.

VF expects to report third-quarter results Oct. 18.
