RACING CARD FEATURES NEW TYPE OF CARS

For the first time in the eight-year history of New River Valley Speedway, a new type of race car will be roaring around the .416-mile paved oval tonight.

The Hooters Touring Series racing card will feature twin 100-lappers. Sharing the spotlight will be the Formula 2000 cars, an open-wheel, Indy-type racer never before seen at the track. The Hooters Late Model Cup drivers will battle for 100 laps in the second half of the twin bill.

Tim Richardson, a 22-year-old mechanical engineering student at Virginia Tech, will be a crowd favorite in the Formula 2000 race. The Maryland resident is currently second in the rookie points standings.

Allen May of Dallas is the current points leader. He has a 178-point lead over defending champion Anthony Lazzaro of Acworth, Ga. Both drivers have three wins this season.

The Hooters Cup stock cars are similar to the All-Pro series, which appeared at the track several years ago. One of the regulars is Jody Ridley of Chatsworth, Ga., a six-time All-Pro champion. Other top contenders are Mike Garvey, the points leader, Bobby Gill and veteran Dick Anderson.

Along with the two Hooters Series races, the local Mini Stock and Pure Stock drivers will see action in 30-lap events paying $500 to win. Both races are for points.

Gates open at 11 a.m., with practice for all cars from 1-4:30 p.m. Qualifying for the Mini and Pure Stock cars will begin at 4:30. The Hooters cars will qualify from 6-7. The two local races begin at 7:45, with the Formula 2000 set to take the green at 8:45. The Hooters Cup race follows. Admission is $15 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.
