RADFORD ROUTS GRAYSON

Radford scored all of its points in the first half and coasted to a 39-6 non-district victory over Grayson County on Friday night in Independence.

Eddie Waldron led the Bobcats (2-1) in rushing with 68 yards on nine carries, scoring one touchdown. Halfback and linebacker Larnell Lewis rushed for 35 yards and one touchdown on seven carries and threw a 48-yard touchdown pass. He also returned an interception 35 yards for a score.

Grayson County (1-2) was led by Joey Swaha, who ran for 88 yards on eight carries.

Covington 21, Alleghany 14: Tom Luckett spearheaded a nine-play, 59-yard drive during the final seven minutes as the Cougars came from behind to defeat the Mountaineers in Covington.

Alleghany (0-3) took a 14-13 lead early in the fourth quarter when Shannon Johnson threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Oliver Jordan. Covington (2-1) clinched the victory with two minutes left when Mike Barber threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tracey Walker.

Luckett had six carries during the final drive and finished with 26 rushes for 110 yards and one touchdown.

Shawsville 27, Craig County 24: In Shawsville, Steven Lawson hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Chris Graham with 26 seconds to play, giving the Shawnees a non-district victory over the Rockets in a wild game.

Craig County scored what it must have felt was the winning touchdown with 1:16 remaining when Jason Blankenship connected with Jake Gale on a 64-yard scoring play. Blankenship rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns for the Rockets (0-3) on runs covering 51 and 20 yards.

Graham scored on a 58-yard run to open the scoring for Shawsville (1-1) and also passed for 183 yards. He was intercepted three times. Scott Holloman rushed for 70 yards and added a 24-yard touchdown run for the Shawnees.

Heritage 19, Franklin County 6: The Pioneers intercepted two Eagles passes in the end zone and also recovered two fumbles to preserve a non-district victory.

Franklin County (1-2) did have some success. Travis Kent rushed 12 times for 91 yards and quarterback Gray Hodges completed five of 14 passes for 95 yards.

The Eagles scored their only points of the night when Hodges hit Shaun Ferguson on a 36-yard touchdown strike with 10:32 left in the game.

Liberty 28, Buckingham County 0: Marvin Harris' 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was all the Minutemen needed to beat the Knights in a Seminole District game in Bedford.

Liberty (2-1 overall, 2-1 district) got another first-quarter touchdown when Corey Gilmore recovered a fumble in the end zone. The Minutemen went up 21-0 in the second quarter when J.J. Coles hit Gregg Reynolds with a 52-yard scoring pass.

Gerry Staples completed the rout with a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Parry McCluer 7, Riverheads 6: In Staunton, the Fighting Blues scored the game-winning touchdown in a defensive struggle in the middle of the fourth quarter to earn their second victory of the year.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, Parry McCluer tailback Nathan Floyd scampered into the end zone from 7 yards to tie the score at 6. Brian Davis kicked the extra point to provide the winning margin for the Fighting Blues (2-1).

Randy Neff scored all of the points for the Gladiators (0-2) with a pair of 26-yard field goals in the second quarter.

Staunton River 22, Nelson County 8: Jeff English rushed for 88 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Golden Eagles whipped the Governors in a Seminole District game.

English scored on runs of 36 and 23 yards in the second quarter and Willie Johnson had a 44-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for Staunton River (2-0, 2-0).

Delmont Crawford rushed for 136 yards and scored the lone touchdown for Nelson County (1-2, 1-2).

Martinsville 14, Patrick County 12: In Stuart, Roger Martin's 10-yard touchdown pass to David Walker with six minutes left enabled the Bulldogs to continue their Piedmont District hex over the Cougars.

Patrick County (1-1, 0-1), which hasn't beaten Martinsville in its 24 years in the league, shocked the Bulldogs by taking a 12-0 lead in the first half on a 65-yard touchdown catch by Ray Hylton and Junior Penn's 10-yard run.

Martinsville (1-1, 1-0) came back on Manti Venable's 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Martin's scoring pass, and both conversion kicks were successful.

Venable led the Bulldogs with 89 yards on 18 carries. Penn had 87 yards on 18 carries for Patrick County.

Bland County 29, Big Creek (W.Va.) 26:In Bland, the Bears saw a 22-12 fourth-quarter lead disappear with a little more than 3:30 remaining in a wild fourth quarter before they came back to defeat Big Creek in non-district action.

The Owls (2-2) took the lead in the fourth quarter with 3:42 remaining on Shawn Holbrook's 13-yard run. Charles Golden's two-point conversion put Big Creek up 26-22.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Owls regained the ball on downs. On their first play from the line of scrimmage, Bland (2-1) linebacker Chris Beman stripped the ball from Holbrook.

Seconds later Bears quarterback John Newberry threw an interception, seemingly ending Bland County's hopes for victory. The play was called back, however, because of a roughing-the-passer call against Big Creek.

Seven plays and 54 yards later, with 55 seconds left, Newberry found the end zone on a 1-yard dive to provide the victory for the Bears. The winning drive was highlighted by a third-and-10 pass to Smokey Parmenter for 14 yards to the Big Creek 39 and J.B. Lambert's 35-yard scamper.

Newberry accounted for three of Bland County's touchdowns, two on the ground and one in the air. Parmenter received most of Newberry's throws, hauling in six passes for 84 yards.

Golden led Big Creek with 14 rushes for 79 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Rural Retreat 34, Fort Chiswell 24: Kenny Lethco scored the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter and the Pioneers fumbled on their last possession as the Indians pulled out a non-district victory in Fort Chiswell.

Rural Retreat (1-2) trailed 24-21 in the fourth quarter. After Lethco scored, Fort Chiswell (2-1) turned over the ball on its 19-yard line with 1:20 to play and Ronnie Six sealed the victory with a 6-yard scoring run for the Indians.

The loss spoiled a stellar night for Pioneers quarterback Adam Morgan, who threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

It was a back-and-forth game for three quarters, with Rural Retreat taking a 7-0 lead on C.L. Patton's 7-yard run and a conversion kick and Fort Chiswell pulling to 7-6 on Morgan's 12-yard pass to Philip Moore.

Lethco scored again for Rural Retreat, then Morgan hit Moore with a 19-yard scoring strike. After Lethco's 6-yard run and a conversion kick made it 21-12 in the third quarter, Michael White returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. White caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Morgan in the third to give the Pioneers a 24-21 lead.

Carroll County 24, Galax 9: In Galax, the Cavaliers scored 24 points to wipe out a 9-0 Maroon Tide lead in the non-district matchup and post their first victory of the season.

Jason McMillian, who 70 yards rushing on 14 carries, scored two of Carroll's touchdowns on runs of 5 and 4 yards. Quarterback Jake Beamer, who threw for 115 yards, had the Cavs' other touchdown on a 4-yard run.

Rodney Sawyers' 42-yard scoring pass from Justin Lineberry provided the only touchdown for Galax (0-3).

Auburn 34, Floyd County 0: In Riner, the cousin combination of David and Conrad Hughes was too much for the Buffaloes (0-3, 0-2) as the Eagles (2-1, 1-0) rolled in Three Rivers District action.

David Hughes ran for 135 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. His scores came on runs of 21, 37, 25 and 4 yards. Conrad Hughes racked up 123 yards on 16 carries, including a third-quarter touchdown run of 5 yards.

Fieldale-Collinsville 27, Chatham 6: In Collinsville, Fieldale-Collinsville dominated Chatham defensively and came away with a Piedmont District victory.

Senior Mancino Craighead led F-C (2-0, 1-0) with 71 yards rushing on 14 carries and one touchdown. He also picked off a pass from his linebacker position.

Chatham (1-1, 0-1) used big plays to put together its one scoring drive, the first play a 52-yard run.

Fieldale-Collinsville overcame three interceptions.

Chilhowie 26, George Wythe 14: Charlie Goble rushed for 166 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Warriors won a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.

Goble's scored on a 4-yard run and kicked the extra point to tie the score at 14 in the second quarter. Chilhowie (2-1, 1-1) took the lead for good when Daryl Peake hit Blake Mason with a 14-yard scoring pass in the third quarter.

Goble sealed it with a 2-yard run in the fourth.

George Wythe (1-2, 1-1) scored 14 points in the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead on Rick Coeburn's 16-yard pass to Randy Belcher and Jason Smith's 3-yard run.

Dan River 34, Laurel Park 6: Ater the Lancers' Anthony Lanier scored on a 75-yard run in the first quarter, Dan River scored 34 points to win a Piedmont District game.

Five players scored for the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0). Lanier rushed for 117 yards for Laurel Park (0-2, 0-1).
