HAMPTON KNOCKS OFF GRAMBLING IN CLASSIC

Eddie Robinson didn't get his 399th victory, and the Grambling State coach isn't blaming anybody but himself.

``We didn't execute at all,'' Robinson said Saturday night after Hampton beat his Tigers 16-7 in the 24th annual Whitney M. Young Classic before a crowd of 61,023 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

The defeat left Grambling with a 1-1 record and Robinson, in his 53rd season at the school, with a 398-144-15 mark.

Hampton (2-1) took the lead for good with 1:50 left in the first half when Anthony Smith, voted the game's MVP, capped a seven-play, 69-yard drive with a 14-yard run up the middle. Hampton, which missed the extra-point kick, led 9-7 at halftime.

Before the game, more than 30 people were injured after falling on top of one another on an escalator reportedly being blocked by Hampton band members.

The Hampton band had just left the field and was on the way to its seats, said Helen Strus, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, which runs the Meadowlands sports complex. Strus said the band members were in formation and were blocking the up escalator leading from the ground level to the lower tier.

``You literally couldn't get off the escalator, the band would not break formation,'' Strus said. The escalator got so crowded that people began falling backwards onto others, Strus said.

She said 25 people received medical treatment at the stadium and 10 others were taken to local hospitals. The most serious injury appeared to be a broken arm, she said.
