``We didn't make as big a deal of it as we did last year,'' said Groh after the Cavaliers' 41-14 triumph, ``but you would think [College Gameday host Chris Fowler] would have learned by now. I think the Mighty Dog is 0-3 against us.''
Groh, not generally known for his running ability, scored his third rushing touchdown of the season and fourth in the past five regular-season games. The touchdown Saturday was his second this year on an option play.
Groh, whose 62.5 career completion percentage is the best for a UVa quarterback with at least 250 attempts, was 14-of-21 for 183 yards and one touchdown.
Groh's 17-yard pass to Germane Crowell in the fourth quarter marked Crowell's first touchdown reception since the opening game of the 1994 season, when the pair connected twice in a 41-17 loss to Florida State.
VISIBLE MAN
Darrell Medley, who has started all four of Virginia's games but never touched the ball in the opener at Michigan, had 10 carries for 59 yards. Medley, who also had the first reception of his career, received considerable playing time Saturday as the lone setback in UVa's one-back offense.
Kevin Brooks started at tailback, but carried only six times for 16 yards. Assistant coach Ken Mack said Brooks is playing with a minor shoulder separation, a groin pull, a fractured hand and a sprained knee.
INJURIES
Linebacker Jamie Sharper, on crutches following arthroscopic surgery Tuesday, said he is experiencing little soreness in his right leg and hopes to return to action no later than Sept.30, when the Cavaliers entertain Wake Forest.
ODD SIGHT
Kyle Kirkeide, Virginia's regular place-kicker during the 1993 season, was selling programs Saturday inside the west gate of Scott Stadium.
Kirkeide, who came to UVa as a walk-on, lost his scholarship after spending the 1994 season as a back-up and elected to spend the fall with the baseball team, which raises money by selling football game programs.
STREAKS
Ronde Barber, who slipped and fell on a 25-yard pass from Donnie Davis to Derrick Steagall for Georgia Tech's first touchdown, later recorded his second interception of the season. It gave the Cavaliers at least one interception in 20 consecutive games.
NEXT OPPONENT
The Cavaliers (3-1 overall, 2-0 ACC) visit Clemson (2-1, 1-1) for a noon game Saturday. The Tigers never have lost to Virginia in ``Death Valley'' and have a commanding 31-2-1 margin in the series, which stood 29-0 before 1990.
