HIGHLANDERS UNBEATEN IN SOCCER

Jason Gvozdas and Ian Spooner led the way Saturday as Radford University got six goals from six players to stay unbeaten with a 6-2 men's soccer victory over Howard University in Radford.

The Highlanders (4-0-1) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit on the goal by Gvozdas, the first of his career.

Che Henderson, Derek Zimmerman, Tommy Young and Eric Ruano scored the other goals for Radford.

The Highlanders outshot the Bison 24-11.

In other sports in the region:

Hollins notched a 6-0 women's soccer victory over Hood College (Fredricksburg, Md.) in the Hollins College Classic.

Sophomore Beth Coughlin and freshman Keri Pittman scored two goals each in the victory.

In another game, Mary Baldwin scored four second-half goals to defeat Averett 4-0.

Ferrum earned a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Lynchburg in Ferrum.

Sophomore Susan Sautter scored a goal and assisted on the goal scored by freshman Hillary Wager.

In Ferrum, N C Wesleyan defeated Ferrum 4-1 in men's soccer.

Senior Ken Howe scored the lone goal for Ferrum. Wesleyan outshot the Panthers 17-12.

In Washington, freshman Sam Chase scored two goals to lead Washington and Lee to a 5-3 victory over Catholic in a non-conference men's soccer game.

The Generals are 3-0 on the season while Catholic dropped to 0-5.

In Greensboro, N.C., freshman Caroline Keen scored two goals and added an assist to lead Washington and Lee past Guilford 4-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer game.

Keen and Michelle Bauman scored first-half goals to give the Generals a 2-0 halftime lead. Karin Treese and Keen finished the scoring for W&L (3-1 overall, 1-0 ODAC).

In Lexington, Washington and Lee senior Brad Paye covered the 8,000-meter cross country course at in 27:20 to win the W&L Invitational and lead the Generals to the team title. The Generals had six of the top eight finishers to easily outdistance second place Dickinson.

In the women's race, W&L senior All-American Josephine Schaeffer was the winner, covering the 5,000-meter course in 19:03 to finish 21/2 minutes ahead of runner-up Amy Trethway from Dickinson.

The races at Franklin County Speedway were cancelled do to the inclement weather. Racing returns next Saturday night with 150-laps of racing for the the S.M.A.R.T. Modified Series.

Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing begins at 8 p.m.
