VA. RAIN SLIGHTLY EASES DROUGHT

Rain fell over the weekend across most of the state, but Virginia remained in a state of emergency Sunday because of a drought.

From 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, it rained 1.46 inches in Bluefield, 0.99 inches in Roanoke, 0.96 inches in Lynchburg, and 0.87 inches in Richmond.

The National Weather Service said it rained another 0.40 inches between midnight and 6 p.m. Sunday in Roanoke.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Services will evaluate the amount of rainfall today to find out its effect on wells, parched farmland and tinder-dry forests, spokeswoman Janet Clements said.

``There was such a rain deficit that the amount that fell may not have been enough,'' she said.

The weather service predicted the rain would taper off from west to east Sunday, with some morning drizzle possible in the eastern half of the state today. Additional rain relief isn't expected until Friday.
