GRANDIN TO SCREEN STRIKE DOCUMENTARY FILM

On Wednesday evening, Roanoke's Grandin Theatre will screen "The Uprising of '34," a documentay about the biggest single industry strike in American history, this month as a kickoff to the Virginia Festival Film Society's new season.

The film, made by George Stoney and Judith Helfand, documents the General Textile Strike, when more than half a million mill workers in the South protested health and safety conditions, 12 hour shifts and low pay. National Guard forces were called in. Some protesters were killed, and many more were beaten in the short-lived strike.

The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., followed by a discussion with the director.

Tickets will be available in the theater's lobby at 7 p.m. General admission is $5.

Officers of the Virginia Festival of American Film will also preview the upcoming festival, the theme of which is U.S. and Them: The Cross-Cultural Politics of American Film. The festival is Oct. 26-29.
