The team recently came away with a win over Lord Botetourt. In August, the team defeated Halifax 600-280. Its next televised match is Oct. 28.
Thirty-five students tried out for the team this year and five seniors were selected as members. They are: Eric Chen, Christopher Donald, William Lee, Mike Shumsky and Rasheq Rahman. Chen is the only returning member from last year's team; Lee was an alternate last year. The group is coached by Dolores Grapsas, who teaches American history.
Sandy Fizer, a student at Pulaski County High School, attended the 67th annual National Institute of Cooperative Education in August in Minneapolis. Fizer represented the school's Future Farmers of America chapter. She was selected to attend the conference after participating at the state conference, sponsored by the Virginia Council of Farmers Cooperatives. She was one of 16 students representing Virginia at nationals.
At the conference, Fizer competed in the talent show and was selected to sing in the opening act.
The following students have been elected officers of the Christiansburg High School VICA Culinary Club: Charlene Jackson, president; Virginia Radford, vice president; Tara Hopkins, secretary; Heather Bradley, treasurer; Michelle Lawrence, reporter; and Margaret Rose, parliamentarian.
TEACHER AWARDS
Christiansburg High School's Agriculture Education Program recently received the Outstanding Program Award at the annual Virginia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association meeting.
Rick Weaver and Dan Swafford, who are in charge of the program, were honored at the meeting. The two developed an Agriscience Advisory Council to assist students in agricultural research.
Weaver and Swafford also are responsible for developing a computer-based animal science class and increasing the department's enrollment from 20 students in 1991 to the current 120.
Two agriculture teachers at Christiansburg High School were recognized at the the annual Virginia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association's meeting for their work with the schools.
REMINDERS
Parents Advocating Gifted Students will have an orientation meeting Monday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be in the cafeteria of Falling Branch Elementary School in Christiansburg.
A video, "Characteristics of Gifted Children," will be shown, followed by a group discussion.

Students interested in preparing for the Scholastic Assessment Test can sign up for a non-credit course at New River Community College. The course, EDCA 112-01, will meet Saturdays starting Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will review test topics, including math and verbal and learn exam shortcuts.
