Mental health group sets Christmas project

CHRISTIANSBURG - Mental Health Association of the New River Valley will sponsor the 1995 Operation Santa Claus project for patients at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion.

Groups or individuals may sponsor one or more patients by preparing gift boxes or donating money for this program. The project requires shopping for the patient as you would a family member and asks for a minimum of $35 to be spent per patient.

The deadline for participants to commit to sponsor patients is Oct. 27. Filled boxes are due by Nov. 17. For more information, call Paula Denton, Mental Health Association, 382-5629 or (800) 559-2800, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Donations to be taken for Christmas Store

BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery County Christmas Store begins accepting used goods and donations Saturday, Nov. 4. This schedule represents a change from previous years. Used goods will be accepted at Northside Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg and at the Christmas Store building. For more information, call Joyce Hendricks, 951-2188.

Voter registration goes through Oct. 10

CHRISTIANSBURG - Following is a list of times and locations for voter registration this week. Registration will continue through Oct. 10. The last day to register and to make address changes for the November election is Oct. 10. The last day for receiving applications for mail ballots is Nov. 2. Nov. 4 is the last day for in-person absentee voting. For more information, call the Voter Registration Office at 382-5741.

Electronic village plans a town meeting

BLACKSBURG - The Choices and Challenges Project and the YMCA at Virginia Tech continue their forum this fall with a series of informal discussions that explore the prospects for life in the electronic village. Discussion will include patterns of communication and community life, legal and ethical issues regarding privacy, freedom of speech and censorship.

The group's next forum is Wednesday, 7:30-9 p.m. in the marketing room at Blacksburg High. The program is titled "Changes in Teaching and Learning." Tamra Oliver of Margaret Beeks Elementary School, Donna Swenson and Suzan Mauney of Blacksburg Middle School and J.T. Mead of media services at Virginia Tech will speaker. The program is free.
