PALMER, SALEM DROP LAUREL PARK

Salem got back on the winning track Monday with a 79-63 victory over Laurel Park in a non-district girls' high school basketball game in Martinsville.

Sarah Palmer, who sat out the last game for the Spartans (4-1) with a bad back in a loss to R.E. Lee-Staunton, led Salem with 24 points.

Shellie Johnson added 21 for Salem, which was without Marilyn Huang, who has a rotator cuff injury.

William Byrd 64, Bassett 37: Cathy Smith hit 17 points as the Terriers, the No.1 team in Timesland, beat the Bengals (2-4) for the second time this year in a non-district game.

Smith, who hit a pair of 3-point goals, got scoring help from Brandy Allen with 15. Byrd is 8-0.

Auburn 60, James River 36: Crystal Moles scored 20 points as the Eagles (3-2) rolled past the Knights (0-5) in a non-district contest at Buchanan.

Auburn (3-2) jumped out to an early 19-9 lead and never trailed.

Amy Sprinkle scored 10 points for James River (0-5).
