WOMAN WAKES TO FIND BURGLAR

A burglar broke into a Southeast Roanoke apartment early Sunday and took money from the resident, who was in her bedroom.

Police gave this account of what happened: The resident, a 21-year-old woman, was awakened by a man, who demanded to know the location of her roommate, who was in the basement.

The man took the woman's wallet, which contained $185. The woman screamed, and the man fled.

Police believe the man entered the Dale Avenue apartment through an open window. n the rear and fled through an unlocked door.

The woman was not injured.

Police also reported the arrest of an 18-year-old in connection with the robbery of a Salem man Sept. 3 and a carjacking Wednesday.

Edward D. Beverly of Roanoke County was charged with robbery by force and carjacking over the weekend. He remained in Roanoke City Jail late Monday on no bond.

In the Sept. 3 incident, the 53-year-old victim was beaten unconscious, and his money and jewelry were taken. In the Sept. 13 carjacking, a 21-year-old motorist was forced from his car at knifepoint. The car was recovered later that day.The victim was not injured.

Officers also charged Beverly with being a fugitive from justice. According to police he has been charged in Georgia with robbery.
