THE PEOPLE COLUMN

A lot of kids get told not to make faces, or they might get stuck with them.

But making faces earned Dean Gates an Emmy Award.

Gates, who lived in Roanoke until he was 5 and returned for many a summer after that, finally landed the Outstanding Achievement for Makeup in a Television Series Emmy for his work on the ``Star Trek'' spinoff, ``Deep Space 9.'' He was nominated twice before for turning actors' faces into the faces of Ferengi and other deep space species.

Gates, 37, earned a two-year degree from Ferrum College before going to film school in Miami. In 15 years of doing special effects and makeup in Hollywood, he's done everything from TV to feature films, including making monster suits for horror movie legend Roger Corman.

The band that produced the platinum album ``Under the Table and Dreaming,'' will soon be back on the stage and singing.

The Dave Mathews Band has been added to the all-star lineup at Farm Aid's 10th Anniversary concert Oct. 1 in Louisville, along with Grand Ole Opry legend John Conlee, a Farm Aid co-founder.

``Under the Table and Dreaming'' has been on the Billboard Top 200 for six months.

Other Farm Aid performers will include Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Hootie and the Blowfish.
