RELIGION BRIEFS

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED, an ecumenical and cross-cultural organization seeking human betterment, will begin its seasonal meetings Friday at 10 a.m. with Fall Forum at West End United Methodist Church, 13th Street and Campbell Avenue Southwest. Dawn Field, representing the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley, will speak. Those attending are asked to bring personal care and paper products for distribution to the needy.

A tea for prospective members is scheduled Oct. 8 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Ronald McDonald House, 2224 S. Jefferson St. An evening meeting group will be considered at this time.

THE WALK FOR THE HUNGRY, the annual six-mile hike known as CROP - for Christian Rural Overseas Program - will be Oct. 8 and workers and sponsors are needed. Wasena Park will be the starting and ending site, and registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.

A fourth of the money raised remains in the Roanoke Valley to buy food for shelters and pantries for the needy. The rest of the money, administered by Church World Service, goes to emergency and ongoing needs elsewhere. Call 890-3128 for sponsor forms and other information.

CHILDREN'S SABBATH, a nationally supported weekend observance for people of all faiths concerned about child poverty, is set Oct. 20-22. The Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley is sponsoring the observance and has free materials suitable for several religious groups. Call 344-0931 for more information.

The Children's Defense Fund is the national developer of the program that covers spiritual, educational, medical and advocacy needs of children.

A NEW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CLUSTER is being developed in the 1200 block of Cleveland Avenue Southwest. Five houses are expected to be built there for the working poor who contribute to them with "sweat equity" construction or office work. In the nine years Habitat has been established in the Roanoke Valley, 46 dwellings have been built by church, civic and business groups. The Cleveland Avenue homes will be of Victorian style to conform to the West End neighborhood.

MELROSE BAPTIST CHURCH., 3520 Peters Creek Road N.W., is sponsoring a 6 p.m. Bible study, "Overcoming Anxiety and Conflict," on Sundays through Oct. 22 Participants are reflecting on Bible passages related to these feelings. Call 366-6631 for more information.

VIRGINIA BETHUNE, a Blacksburg resident who has been active in New River Valley church life for more than a decade, will present a seminar, "A Merrie Heart," Oct. 16 at Central United Methodist Church, 428 S. College Ave. in Salem.

The seminar, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., covers mental, physical and spiritual health and their integration in the mature Christian. Call 389-2933 by Sept. 28 to reserve the $4 lunch.

Bethune has presented her seminar at several Western Virginia churches.

THE DREAM MASTER, a discussion of Eckankar spiritual ideas, will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. at 2400 Gate House Lane, Salem. The Roanoke Valley study group is affiliated with the Virginia Satsang Society. Call 389-8043 for more information about the ECK belief system with headquarters in Minneapolis, Minn.

SAINTS IN PRAISE of Staunton Avenue Church of God will present its first concert Sunday at 4 p.m. at the church, 1926 Staunton Ave. N.W.
